Thread: Rediculously long hacks?

  1. Rediculously long hacks?

Played a quick 9 today with two guys I met, both about 25, decently built frame. They werent very good golfers, but man did these two kill the ball. I guess they were college baseball players, and took up the game somewhat recently. 2nd hole, short par 4, 306 to a creek that splits the fairway. Ive almost never reached the creek, I took honors hit a nice drive up there 15-20 yards short. Both of them give it a hellacious wack and one is sitting on the bank, other bounced over the creek. Holy hell. (They both made bogey) They were even long with irons, par 3 7th, 181. I hit a solid 7 iron to 15', They flew the green with 8 irons. Par 4, dogleg left 8th. 380ish. One pushed his drive into the trees, the other drove a greenside bunker (I was 60 yards back). This was absolutly mind-numbing, I am not a short hitter by any means of the word. I got absolutly destroyed in distance by these two blokes.

    My boss is like that.

Not a good putter.. Can't chip.. can't hit from sand.. Hits sorta decent iron shots, but is LONG as crap with his irons and driver. He plays.. maybe once a year, or had in the past, and was seriously knockin them passed 300 yards..

Its amazing how many kids you see at the range that will get a large bucket of balls and all they bring is their driver. That is the nice thing about our range, nice range with a great putting green that is hardly ever used.

I haven't seen anyone like that in quite some time. In fact, never really have. The only guys I've really played with that were legitimately longer than me this year were both scratch.

I've played with this big lefty at my club a few times. He's about 6'5" and claimed he drove the 3rd green. I assumed he meant "that day", when I know the tees were back. He must have meant the day they bumped them up to make it drivable for a tourney. I drove it that day too... with my 3W. Anyway, I expected him to be nuking the ball but I had him by 5-8yds. easy. My only conclusion is that most people aren't nearly as long as they think. I barely hit it 260 but my 260 is all carry, dead level, sea level. Downhill, little downwind, hard fairway it can end up pretty far down there.

I think ALL the 20 somethings that play my home course are like that. A lot of them can bomb it out there around 280 with their driver. Occasionally it even finds the fairway. But then it will take them 6 more strokes to get it on the green from 100 yards out. Then 3-4 putts to finish the hole.

You said these two were somewhat new to the game. Give them time, they'll probably be amazing golfers.
I'm sure if they are obsessed with hitting driver on every hole their scores will vary greater from one day to the next.

  9. Re: Rediculously long hacks?

I had the same experience last time I played. I don't ever remember being the shortest player in my group but I was checking skycaddie and they were hitting drives upwards of 330 and 1 guy touched 360 2x. unfreaking believable. Would have never believed it if I wasn't there.

They need their long drives as a positive memory of the round after they enter their score of 100+.

  11. Re: Rediculously long hacks?

I've probably mentioned this about 100 times in here but last year played with my 30+ year old neighbor Byron (The Bomber in ST) many times until he moved to Colorado. He was in his 3rd year playing and had a beautiful easy swing, alot like Els. About my size. He absolutely crushed his driver. I had one of my rare, better ones out about 265 (GPS) in the middle of the fairway and his was 100 yards in front of me. 365 yards! And he had 50 to the green and I had 150. We both parred it. :) Another course had a 500 yard par 5. His drive was right next to the 150 yard stake (confirmed with GPS). His iron play was okay and he sprayed a few of those long drives once in awhile but his short game was good. Averaged in the low 40's for 9 holes. When his irons get more accurate he's going to be something. Any of the other Wisconsin ST'ers that have played with him can tell you this. Wonder how long he hits them in that thin Colorado air? :D

Jocks can do that, they've got timing, strength, speed and those fast-twitch muscles that enable them to maketheir bodies do exactly what they want at a very high speed.

One of my kids was like that. He went to college on two athletic scholarships (football & soccer). A natural Ernie Els swing and could hit the ball a really long way, but didn't have much of a clue where it comes down. His game fell apart around the green, didn't practice short game. Not unusual that he'll drive over 300 and walk away with a double.
It must be awful to have to work for a living.

What do you have after your round when you card a 105 and avg. 210 off the tee?

The beer girl kinda broke smile as you handed her a $5 tip?

  14. Re: Rediculously long hacks?

Funny you say that OP, because yesterday i went to a new championship course that is being built not far from my place. Only 9 holes are open at the moment, par 36 links style course.

I rang a good mate of mine (3 marker in australia), and we both went along to get a game on the new track. We walked to the first, and there was a guy waiting for us. Probably about 35-40 years old, 5"5 at max, and he looked like he was carrying 15kg too many. We got talking while we waited for the fairway to clear, and turns out he used to play some pretty competitive level of baseball. His swing was ugly as sin, but all day he hit it 20 or 30 metres past myself and my friend. I'm not "short" by any stretch of the imagination, so it was just amazing to see something so ugly hit it past me. I found more fairways than he did, but he was constantly the longest in our group.

He had absolutely no game at all, and finished up with 51 thru 9 holes. I had 35 in a fairly ordinary day, but it goes to show that length off the tee means squat if your short game cant hold its own.

LOL. Played with a guy like that on Friday. Watched him drive a green at 315 two holes after taking an 11 on a short par 4. Couldn't hit a solid iron shot, deplorable short game, but could flat bust it with driver.
