Thread: Help! I've become a digger

  1. Help! I've become a digger

every time I go out now I chunk a few more shots and today almost every iron shot was dug in deep. Now every swing I hit the ground and the club digs in and almost stops. Not a normal fat shot but I almost hit the ground and the ball at the same time and the club just stops.

Is there anything that is the normal cause? I think I might be trying to get my weight so far to the left I dip a little.

Help I use to be such a good ball striker my swing still feels good but the ground keeps getting in the way.

Sliding your hips instead of turning.

Are you bent over more than normal? You might be getting too steep, trying to "hit down" into the ball too much.

I used to dig pretty bad, now I stand a bit more upright, and I make a much better weight shift to my left foot, and full turn. I hit it clean and take a size 12 divot after the ball.

Rotate. When you're at address, if your hands are slightly ahead of the clubhead, that's as far down as you need to go. When you swing through the ball, the club will straighten out, and bottom out, through the ball as it should. Your swing should not really be assisting the club to go up, or farther down. Turn your shoulders and turn your body, but don't do anything up and down to change the top of your pendulum. Just turn through. If you've held your angles correctly and make a nice acclerating swing through the ball, eureka. You're swinging AROUND your body on a tilted axis. So focus on going around, through the ball, then back around. No up and down!

I take some pretty huge divots. So long as I hit ball first I like it that way.

I keep the feeling that my knees are pulling in towards each other. I keep the weight on the inside of my right foot, and transfer it to the left foot around the ball of my foot, and then through there to the outside of my left foot after impact. When I go that, I stay in sync and connected. My head doesn't move because I have a good foundation, and at impact I'm looking at 1/2-1 inch infront of the ball.

If everything is right, I hit the ball first, and when it bottoms out, depending on ball position and what shot/club I was using I'll take a slight divot, or I'll yank a shoe sized divot and launch it off in front of me to the left a bit.

You might also have a reverse pivot, and not rotating around your spine.

Moving your head alot during the swing will cause you to bottom out at different spots as well.

Try some 3/4 swings, focus on keeping everything in your lower body still, but make your full turn with your shoulders, and come down easy, focusing on not moving your heads and staying in the impact position.

    Fat,

In addition to what was said above....

If your practicing off of matts I would get off of them. That would be my first suggestion. I would practice off of grass with long irons hitting 60% shots and work your way backwards thru your set trying to keep your divots with all clubs the same depth. Try to make a perfect square with your divots with a bucket of balls.
