    Scripting my Shots

Am thinking I am going to try to script my first 2 shots on each of the par 4's and par 5's for next time I go out to the course I regularly play. For instance I can normally drive 240 with my 5 and keep it in the fairway, now my new Adams Tight Lies will pick it off the fairway and throw the ball another 185-190, again I can do this normally. Well hole 10 is a par 4 that runs out 443 to the hole. Adding these 2 shots together I get 425, maybe a little less, that leaves me 15 yards or so to the hole. The best score I have gotten on this hole thus far is a 6, so I am thinking if I script my shots ahead of time maybe I will take some of the thinking out and just be able to hit the ball. Then as I get up around the green I can pick my club as the shot dictates.
Has anybody else ever tried anything like this?

  2. I can't really say I have. I don't like to think about club selection and scoring of the round or big changes in the swing untill I am on the course or range.Because I find I get myself all physced out and instead of focusing on the game I am just constantly thinking about the swing and I end up playing poorly when I do that.

  3. About the only shot I can plan ahead is the next tee shot: driver vs. fairway metal vs. iron. Any following shot is based on where the first one landed, which could be anywhere.
TaylorMade Tour Burner TP 10.5° Penley Stealth "JD"
Tour Edge Exotics 15° Penley Stealth "JD"
    Nickent 3DX Ironwood DC 17° & 20° UST Proforce V2
    Hogan Forged Radial 3-SW
    Never Compromise VooDoo

Do you know the difference between a BMW and a porcupine? The porcupine has its' pricks on the outside.

  4. I try to plot some shots that i know i WILL have. On my home course some of the fairways even on a good hit will leave you with an uneven lie so its hard to say off 6th tee ill take 3w then have a 5 iron into the green when i might have a downhill lie that i need a 3 iron for.

    Dave,

I do this all the time.

The wind usually dictates where I want to put the ball and for what type of shot. If the green on a par 4 is more accessable to the right, then I play it out that way. That leaves me with more options than having to hit a high draw over a bunker, ect.

Thinking holes through is a good mental drill. However, you must also hone your mind into accepting that everything doesn't always go as planned....

    Keep up the good work,

I am a beginning Golfer (less than a Year at it)

I tried it today and it did not help, did not seem to hurt either. I got a 110 last Monday and a 116 Today. This is the first time I have been golfing that my score did not go down though. Of course up to this point I have been golfing(Actually hitting on the course and keeping score) only once a month. I usually practice for a month between trips. I just couldn't pass on the opportunity today. Now I need to practice at least 4 weeks before I go back.

A score of 110, and 116 are both progress over November though. Shot 126 in November.

Practice is great, but you need goals. And, you should make sure you're working on the big scheme of things rather than specific goals. For example, working on ball striking will help your game bigtime. And work on getting the feel of your putter dialed in. Many strokes are saved and lost on the dance floor.

Before you know it, you'll be breaking 100 and then it's all downhill from there!

You seem to have a good head for the game, so the next step is taking that and applying it to the physical side. Create a couple of routines to take to the range and work through them, just as you would if you went to the gym. Hit only a few drivers and work more on wedges and scoring irons. They're the ones that get you out of the trouble that your long irons create!

Good luck. And keep up up to date with the progress!:miz:

Wedges are the most practiced club for me

I need to go practice my putting for sure, 42 putts total today.Did not have any 4 putts and that was an improvement. Hit no greens in Regulation(par minus 2).
I practice my PW, SW, and LW alot though. I probably hit 400 balls a week with those three clubs. My next club to buy will be a better putter though. Something in a Mallet style putter. I will get better this year though. I am aiming for 80 strokes by the end of 2006, might not make it but I am going to give it a ride.

  9. i script most of my shots.
It is like a chess board you have got to stratigise to get the best result that u can possibly get. you gotta think about what clubs can get you ther the safest in the least amount of moves.

I usually plan out each hole from the tee, I won't do it before a round though. I will as I approach the tee where I want my shot to end up and what angle I want into the green and will adjust according to that.

I have found a great deal of success scripting my shots on my so called "temptation holes". I know that I need to tee off with my 4 iron and avoid the temptation to go for gold on one hole in particular. Knowing that (at least within a club or two) really helps me to play with my mind and just not crank away with the big dog on every box. So it may not apply for every hole or for every situation, but that is what works for me.

  12. Here's my script:

Hole 1, driver, little fade, in the hole.
Hole 2, driver, little fade, in the hole.
Hole 3, driver, little fade, in the hole.
Hole 4, driver, straight over the bunker, bounce on, in the hole.
Hole 5, driver, little fade, in the hole.
Hole 6, 5-iron, in the hole.
Hole 7, driver, hard fade, in the hole.
Hole 8, driver, straight over the bunker, bounce on, in the hole.
Hole 9, 7-iron cut shot, in the hole.

So far my best matching of that script on the front 9 is only 36 extra shots. But I'm working on it.

Try to find a store where you can try as many putters as possible and don't limit yourself to what you think you're going to like. I thought I was gonna buy a mallet but after trying about 100 different putters I ended up with something completely different.

In any case, get one you like because if you can turn that 42 putts into 36 your 100 becomes a 94.

  14. I do not script clubs for specific holes, but on courses where I play frequently I do approach most holes with a "planned attack". Essentially, I am looking for a landing zone to get into off of the tee. Typically, I like to myself up for an approach shot from 150 yards out from the green if the landing area is adequate as I can easily adjust club selection if I end up 10-20 yards short or long of my goal. I try to avoid setting up an approach shot from within 120 yards unless I can get it into chipping/pitching range.

With a landing zone chosen, the conditions and distance to it will determine my club selection. It may be driver or it may be a 6-iron depending on the availability of a good landing zone and available paths into the green. Unless I know the flag locations ahead of time (hardly ever), I plan the landing zone based on shooting for the center of the green and/or avoiding hazards around the green.

I play my best golf by sticking with the plan and only taking risks and deviating from the plan when I am sure that I can pull off the shot in question 75-80% of the time.

Pre selecting clubs would be rather difficult as you do not know what the conditions are going to be until you are at the course.
