Greatest Shot

The weather sucks, no golf here for the next 3 weeks. I need to hear something positive to keep my spirits up. I want to hear about everyones greatest shot of all time. I know it will be hard to choose but that's the point, go back and replay them.

Here's Mine

Summer of 2004 I was about 5 months into my golfing career playing with my dad. The hole was a 545 yd. par 5 pretty much straight away with a rather narrow fairway. I lined up too far left to compensate for my slice and caught some branches before it had time to come back around. Bad went to worse as it hit a tree and got sent into the edge of the woods. I was out at about 220 yds. and wanted to get as much as I could coming back out. I hit a 7 iron out and it clipped some branches and fell quickly leaving me 240 to go from the left rough. I pulled out my 5wood and took aim to the right and kept the face closed. I hit a perfect draw, 240 yard rocket that hit perfectly on the upslope of the fringe. It ran right at the stick missing by inches and leaving me with a 2 footer for Birdie.

mines real easy to remember

Did it yesterday, hit from 250 out with my 3 Iron and dropped it right next to the green, totalling 240 with my 3. It was a magnificent sight.

I have two aces to my credit. One was a nice 7 iron, the other a downwind wedge.

My best executed shot was a 240ish 3 wood draw on a par 5 that left me half a revolution of the ball for an eagle. One less blade of grass and I would have had the infamous albatross.

Eerily, this was the same hole I attempted a 3iron from a fairway bunker, pulgged it and threw my 3 iron into a tree. The first and last time I ever threw a club.

So, the best and worst executed shots were on the same hole. Interesting.

You're using a wood for that?

Real men hit there 3 IRON from there.

My best shot this year was a couple of weeks ago. 140 out with the ball about six inches below my feet. The fairway is above the green but the green is elevated so you can't roll it on. Hit a near perfect 8 iron to about 18".

For me, those are the ones that keep me coming back.

I put a post on "hit with drive" where I narrowly escaped self sterylization. This was done on that very same hole trying to recreate that very same shot.

I played a hole with a friend that hit 5 seperate trees on one hole. Not on purpose, but he just got in so much cabbage that he was forced into trying a hero shot. Finally after hitting 3 straight trees, he pitched out accross the fairway, hitting a tree over there. Finally, after chipping into the fairway, he airmailed the green and hit the 5th tree.

Needless to say, he didn't par that back 9.

Gotta love those trees. One thing I always notice on a lot of PGA courses is the lack of trees. I mean they have a few strategically placed ones but not like my home course. If Tiger ever hit some of the shots he does on those courses you'd have to call the eagle scouts to go find it. Not to mention it would take like 3 shots just to get out.

Many courses around here, he'd never find his ball period!

But then, he'd take an unplayable lie, make a recovery shot and make his putt for par.

It'll be interesting when the USGA institutes it's tournament ball for the PGA tour. Every person using the same ball. Hell, I thought maybe growing some grass in the rough was an easy answer to curb the idea of guys swinging out of their boots, but I guess not.

Remember Oakmont about 8 years ago when they grew the rough about 7" for the US open? That made madmen out of people that hit into it. They had a bunch of guys leave with injury trying to be heros and hit huge irons out of it.

I like that idea more, being penalized for a shitty shot.

There is a par 3 on Forest Hills that I have never parred. It's uphill, 180 yards, and the green is elevated; any shot hitting around the green but not on it rolls away. Bunkers on both sides.

Yesterday my game was in the s****r. Swing thoughts changed every 3 seconds. By the time I got to this hole, I was ready to give up golf. So I teed it up, pulled out my 3h, took one look at the green, and swung away. Ball landed 6 feet from the cup and stopped dead.

Of course, I missed the birdie putt by a whisker. Par. Finally.

My greatest shot of all time followed one of my typical poor shots. I was playing Disney's Lake Buena Vista after several days of rain (this round got rained out as well) and hit a decent drive on a long par 5. Due to lack of roll in the wet fairway, I took out my 15* Hybrid attempting to get up close in the fairway while staying short of the pond so that I could wedge it onto the green on my third shot. Of course, I cold top my hybrid (left quite a nice hole in the fairway a few inches in front of the ball) for a net gain of 50 yards. Pissed off and very far away from the cart as the fairways were off limits, I decided to attempt a 250 yard carry to an elevated green over the the pond that guarded the front of the green. I bring the 15* hybrid back and let loose hitting the best shot I have ever hit with a fairwaywood/hybrid that landed 5 feet from the hole, hopped once, and spin back 4 feet leaving me about a 6 footer for birdie. It was the most amazing feeling hitting a shot like that. It electrified my game and I started playing par golf over the next several holes until a thunder storm shut us down on the 9th hole. Awesome feeling, just awesome.

My best shot was last summer. The four of us were playing best ball. Going into the 18th hole my partner and I were down 1 hole and having carried the 17th over, we still had a chance to win. It was a par 3 having a pond in front of the green. Sadly enough my partner and I both shanked our tees, his in the drink mine about 6 inches out of the water. The pond was low so I had about ten feet of mud to go through to even get to my ball. Anyway, I rolled up my pants, removed my shoes and socks and waded into the mud well over my ankles. My buddies were laughing so hard when I swung and covered myself in mud they nearly missed the ball go into the cup from about 20 yards out. To finish it off, they missed their birdie putts and we won the dough.

The one I remember the most is a 3rd shot on a par 5 (after 2 bad shots) from around 220 yards. Hit the stick to within a foot and got my birdie.

Second may be from well in the forest from 110 yards to within a couple feet through the trees, after thinking of taking an unplayable.

Maybe my best in the hole was from 100 yards in the cup for a birdie after taking a penalty. Only one to take a penalty on the hole, and I think everyone else had decent shots to finish with no better than par, they were pissed to say the least.

I guess the ones I remember the most are when I felt doomed up to that point

3/4 7 iron that I had to go under one tree and over the next and hook it about 15 yards. Rolled up there to about 3 feet for a 2 putt par

I was golfing with a group of "seniors" that I knew. It was a "best ball" format ... and on the 240 yard, 13th hole. It is a moderate dog-leg to the left and I am a "lefty" [I am 55 years old, 5'9" and 155 lbs as well]. I drove my 3w and wound up 8 feet "pin high"!
That was sweet ... every eye was popped and every jaw was dropped!!
