Can't wait for 2Morrow

Tomorrow I am going to play my old home course with my dad. It is par 71-118slope-6075yds. Every hole but #4 and #7 (both par 4's 307 and 293)set up perfect for my ballflight. The greens are super easy, soft and slow. Most of the holes I can choose from about 8-9 different combinations of club and flight options to hit the green. I am going in with confidence, trying to break 80 for the first time ever. I have it all played out in my head with about 18 strokes to waste for a 79. If I come back saying I shot over 90 please give me hell.

Thanks. I have been trying to beat him for 2 years. I've tied him several times. Last time out I made the fatal mistake of adding up scores after parring the par5 17th. I was up by 4. Then I sliced my drive into a swamp. I didn't see the red stakes until I had hit my 3rd off the tee. I ended up making an 8 and he parred for the tie. BTW he's 58 and I'm 30 so I'm not exactly a youngen, just my juvenile immaturity showing through I guess.

I know the feeling. I'm 25, but remember when I was younger my goal was just to beat my dad. Once I beat him, I didn't STOP beating him. Then his goal was to beat me. I quit playing as much the last couple years.

When I first started, he probably averaged 95 or so. He started really working on his game, and his average is probably about 80 now. It's a pretty close match whenever we play now & we both enjoy it tremendously. Last time out he eagled the 18th to beat me by one.

Damnit He beat me again

The old course was not open yet... very strange, it looks like total crap anyway. We went to a different course that he's played before but I hadn't. It was the tightest course I've ever played. Some fairways were only 30 yards wide then tall thick pine trees, hardly any rough. I have nerver seen yardages so far off in my life. Just about every marker was off by a good 10-15 yards. Most were too long. When I come up 15 yards short with a 6iron inside of 150...something is off. Then I fly the green with a knockdown fade 7iron from supposidly 155. Well I ended up at 99 and he shot a 97. I can't blame it all on the course, I hit a lot of poor shots and missed a lot of makable putts. I suppose breaking 100 isn't too bad considering I didn't make one par or birdie. I avoided really blowing up on any holes. Well I guess I'll try again next week. I did kind of let him know when I hit a 3wood 10 yards further than his driver though.

Too bad ezra, you'll beat him one day though.

I haven't ever beaten my dad before, and my dad has never beaten his dad. What is it about beating your own father that is so hard I wonder?

I think a lot of it is mental, for both of us. Whenever we are close he just turns into a par/bogie machine. I always screw up big time. I had him by 3 once on 18 and shot a 6 on a 140yd. par 3. He makes par.

I would agree it is mostly mental. My father was a pretty decent golfer, usually scoring in the high 70's, even after he turned 60 (its the SHORT GAME thats wins!!). But time is on your side. My game has improved and his has declined a good bit. Started beating him on fairly consistant basis about two years ago. There is no greater satisfaction than kicking a 80 year old man's ass

everytime I arrange to go to golf with my dad he backs out at the last minute

he doesnt play golf enough and is probably scared to lose to a beginner

a lot of people I play golf with tell me that I play well for someone that has just started (better then them even)

the groundskeeper at where I play golf says ive got a good swing but I just have to learn not to take my eye off the ground until the swing is completed

he said the object is to watch the ground until the swing is completed and then you look up to see where the ball is going

Bittersweet Victory

Our old course was in horrible shape today. They just opened a few days ago. I thought maybe they were doing some maintainence but apparently not. The teeboxes are crap and the holes had the "volcano" effect, rejecting all downhill 3 footers. I beat my dad by 3 with a 91. He putted like crap though, so did I but just well enough to edge him. It was a crap 91 though, I blew a lot of opportunities and could have easily scored in the low 80's.

Age and treachery will always beat youth & skill.

My son anounced that he shot 93 last Wed & is gunning for me. I told him that I shot 98 & was pleased with my round.

I didn't tell him that I played 18 & for the first time in months my back felt fine at the end.

I didn't tell him that I had 5 triples on the front nine & shot 53, mostly because I'm dialing in distance again. I was getting the distances before I hurt my back. Back nine was solid Bogey golf.

I didn't tell him that I've settled on a putter & while I was still missing 10-15 footers, most of my 2nd putts were tap ins.

I'll also be playing 3 days this week during a trip out of town. I didn't tell him that either.

I also didn't tell him that I would be playing those 3 days with my brudder (a scratch golfer) who has vowed to cure my OTT move.

I told him I was looking forward to giving him the opportunity & would pay for the round.

C'mon kid, Bring it!

I enjoy reading these father-son stories.

My father-in-law is a golf nut and we play 2-3 rounds a year and they are some of the most enjoyable for me of the entire summer.

I am looking forward to the day, that my little guy can come with me on the golf course.
