Busted!! Finally

Finally broke 90 this afternoon. What a boring round, no miracle shots, just slightly fading 250-270yd. drives and 8,9 and PW's. Started out par right off the bat and managed to hold everything togehter for the most part. Shot 43-43 with 34 putts. My putter went to hell on the back 9 and I duffed a 6iron on the same par 5 I reached yesterday. The back is easier than the front and I could have broke 40 or should have. I'm happy to finally get there for the 1st time this year but I want more.

Bitch Bitch Bitch. LOL
Ezra, buddy, when you make a hole in one are you gonna moan cause it was on a par 3 rather than a short par 4?

No, but I just look back at all the stupid mistakes and blown oppurtunities. If I can hold on to this swing and make a few putts outside 3ft. well I hope to see 70's sometime.... hopefully this year. I have gained back a full point on my index in 24hrs. though, it's a start.

Ezra,
Was just yanking your chain a bit no offenxe intended. And I do know what you mean. My father always says this is a SOB game. Should Of Been. " I Should Of Been a little firmer with that putt. " " I Should Of Been aiming a little farther left of the pin".

I too would like to see the 70's. heres to both of us.

No offenense seen much less taken. On one hand I'm excited but on the other I'm worried I will lose this swing. It's just been getting better and better though. I am really learning to play within my limits. For me that's basically hit fades and set-up fades whenever possible. My putting needs work but who's doesn't and I need to stay agressive on my chips and pitches. Amazing how much the mental factor plays. I had a lot of confidence today and was looking to hit every GIR, except the par 5's.

Dont worry about losing the swing. You will lose it But it will come back too. Had a spur of the moment round today with a young kid I know who is pretty decent. Talked him into putting a little (very little lol) $$ on the round. Wasnt worried about making the $ or losing it, just wanted added pressure. Had a good round going thru the first 8 holes (was on my way to a 41 even with two penalty strokes) til I lost it on number 9. took a 9!! a 9 on a par 5. arrgghhh! Started worrying and it took its toll. All mental mistakes. Either I was worried I would slice off the box and then did, and if I didn't slice then thought I had it made and lost focus. Shot crap on the back nine.
On the positive side, I think (hope? pray? ) I see the error of my ways and just need to keep the positive attitude in tomorrows round.

I CAN get in the groove, I have been in the groove and WILL do it again, just need to BELIEVE and stay in the groove. Like you, when you have confidence in the chips and putts they are good. just have to get rid of any doubt.

maybe hypnotism?

Damn. Lost it already. 92 Today and I felt like I had a big bandage on my swing. Managed to par the final 2 holes at least. Too many doubles. If there was a tree anywhere in site, I hit my tee shot right behind it.

Two steps forward, one step back Ezra. And a 92 was really a baby step back. Just keep taking the two steps forward

The thing that I got out of today's round is that I can just play more conservative and still score. I started out double, bogey, double and realized my swing was a bit off. Next par 4 I teed off with a hybrid and the thing just kept rolling. I was in nearly the same position I try to get to drawing my 3w. I left the approach on the very front of the green and 2 putted for the 1st par. I actually considered 92 to be OK for how crappy my swing was. The old hacker in me would have kept trying to hit impossible shots and turn it into a 100+ round in no time.

Yeah, don't be dismayed by the 92. I've gone up over 90 a few times since first breaking into the 80's a few weeks back. A couple of those days it just felt like I couldn't swing a club at all, but then I realized I was still breaking 100 by a wide margin, and I remember how when I first broke 100 it felt like I was swinging a whole lot better.

So the perspective starts changing. Now if I shoot in the low 90's, I feel off. Not all that long ago, if I shot in the low 90's I would be crowing about how good the 18 holes went.

Exactly how I'm feeling. I played my old home course today and was expecting low 80's. I get more pissed at myself for a poor decision than a poor shot. By the end of the season I want to look at 90 the way I look at 100 now. I just don't go there anymore. It's just like a tease when the swing is really clicking for a while, I start to think there is no reason I shouldn't par every hole. Heck I could make 1 decent size mistake and still par every hole. I'll start a new thread when that happens.

I think that is where the real score lowering comes in. Saving par !! I have been spanking out some longer drives lately, but am often left at the edge of the rough/woods. Branches block the usual wedge/ 9 iron shot onto the green, so been having to knock out a low 6 or 7 iron and run to the green. That often doesnt work perfect but if I leave myself a good chance at getting up and down, or at worse getting up and two putting, I feel I have kept it together and played it well.
One par and the rest bogey will put me under 90, and I am usually getting 5 to 7 pars in a round. My score is made or broken by the number of double bogies or worse.
Its like you said also ezra, going for the fantastic shot is really tempting fate and with bad odds.

Just grabbed the closest scorecard on the desk. was week ago yesterday and had a 89 (been getting that a lot lately but still feels a hell of lot better than a 90 )

2 birdies
5 pars
5 bogies
4 double bogies
2 triple bogies

14 strokes on holes worse than bogie. This knowledge will (or should) definately change how I play my game. I remember both triples and would say bad chips were the main reason for both . chipped over into the creek for a penalty, chip short then cooked it over, left the short chips far from the hole and had to two putt. Being 20 yards or less off the green in two and taking five more strokes to get down is gonna kill ya. depressing .

Yeah that happens to me every once in a while. I'm actually a pretty good wedge player, well better than most guys I've played with. When that's off I'm in trouble. Most of my bad holes are caused by trying to get greedy off the tee. Today I started off with a 6 on a 290 something par 4. I've driven this green a few times but it's a stupid choice, especially first shot of the day. I could hit a hybrid out to 210-215 and just drop a 54* wedge inside 10ft. a lot easier. I double-crossed my drive and ended up way left on the other side of trees. I had an opening and about 20yds. to the trees so I tried to punch a little 8iron through. Got too much height, caught a branch, now I'm stuck in the middle of the trees. One of these days I'll get consitent enough to play more agressive, until then I'm going to start cutting down my risks more often.
