Question about getting a tee time...

OK, this is probably a really odd question but I intend to play my first ever serious round next weekend and will be calling for the tee time soon (Only book 7 days in advance exceptfor league and members, it's a public access Country Club....)

Likely I'll be going alone, so should I tell the guy on the phone that I suck? I'm thinking, and perhaps I'm giving the guys too much credit, that they might try to avoid sticking me with 3 scratch golfers.

I don't mind sucking in front of people, but I don't like slowing down guys who are obviously great players and ruining their round.

Should I bother to tell the guy? Is it likely to matter?

So, I guess that's my question...

- Sean

Shouldn't really matter too much. I've played some horrible rounds with decent golfers, I just pick up if I'm really slowing things down. BTW I'm down in Providence, RI if you ever want to play. I'll be back by Sun., I have a run to Ft. Lauderdale but I'm leaving on Monday. 5 Dropoffs, 2 pickups, yuck. There are a lot of decent courses for cheap down my way too.

Okay, couple of things to point out:

A) Most courses don't put singles in for tee times, they just toss you in somewhere when you get there.

B) Players who aren't will never bother a good golfer. Now, what I mean by good is not necessarily scratch or anything, but rather they have a good attitude, and focus on their shot. As long as you keep up the general pace of play, it won't matter, and never has for me.

C) You will learn worlds more from a scratch or low handicap golfer than someone your own skill level. In fact, when I was trying to get my scores down I intentially tried to golf with some of my friends who were scratch, but then again, I got over the intimidation hurdle.

D) Don't be intimidated. Golf your own game, you can't shoot scratch yet so don't pretend to, just relax, have fun, and play your own game, and you'll shoot the best you can. I'd say this is the hardest, but I got over it quick when in my first tournament ever(not even a year golfing, I was 14), they tossed me in with a scratch golfer at a course I'd only played once before.

Just play as best you can, and be smart. Let faster players play through. Besides, if your golfing real bad, just act drunk.

LMAO!

Thanks for the advice guys! The one thing I'm gonna do is pick up at double-par or if I'm just so out of it that I'm slowin it down too much. I'm there to have fun at this point and just working on my shots. Hell, what's the difference between 160 and 170

What JEFF4i said and picking up on a real bad hole is just a good courteous thing to do. If the group ahead is super bad you won't have any problems at all!!

If you really are that bad, and want to play something besides a par 3 course, I would suggest playing early, early, EARLY morning.

Get there when it's dark out and be the first one off. Just check Weather.com to see when sunrise is supposed to happen on the day you are planning on playing, and get there 15 minutes before that.

If the proshop is open, most likely they'll let you right out.

Augster has a good idea. I used to play at great course every day(Golf Digest #2 new course in US), and get out there at 6:15 and played a 3 hour round(walked) by myself. Probably one of the most enjoyable things ever.

I've sometimes wondered what effect it would have on me to try to play a morning round. I'm one of those sorts who just does not wake up well.
