Launch Monitor or Me?

I was at Golfsmith today after hitting a large bucket at the range. I wanted to see how high I should tee up my ball to acheive optimum launch angle. At the range I was carrying my 905R well past the 250 yard marker, then on the launch monitor my clubhead speed was about 97 - 105 mph, ball speed was about 150mph, launch angle was 14*, and spin was at roughly 20 - 100. This was all done with a 905R 9.5* with a UST V2 Stiff. Everything equated to about 285 yard drives with roll, well every drive I hit on the course was about 285 carry and 290+ with roll no wind and flat fairways. At golf galaxy I was on the launch monitor there (same type of vector) and the results were dramatically different especially in the clubhead speed area. At golf galaxy I was consistantly 112mph clubhead speed, 168mph ball speed, 12* launch angle and similar side spin hitting my 8.5* 905R X Stiff Speeder.

Anyone else hear of any issues like this? I am not really trusting launch monitors anymore.

Tell them to turn the tailwind off next time. 113 swing speed, 160+ ball speed, 262 yds. is what I got on the launch monitor. No way in hell a sub 105mph swing is remotely near 285yds. Maybe about 235. So yeah, something is very off there.

Dug this up from a while back. This is what it takes to go 300.

297yards of just carry + 12* launch angle means well over 330yards with roll. I can hit it 330yards with roll with a tail wind and hitting it downhill. When I was hitting over +117mph I was hitting the back of my neck with my shaft on the follow through.

Oh ok. I don't really take roll into account. The rough usually slows down my longest drives.

I spent an afternoon on the launch monitor. My ss is 105 mph (they calculated it off a 160-165 ball speed). My launch angle was between 14º-16º and I was straight with a 260-280 yard carry distance. That's EXACTLY what I got on the course. I don't know if they calculated the ss wrong but the 165 ball speed and whatever spin I had (don't remember) gave that distance. Now when I roll some out I get out pretty nice.

Here's what R35 gave me. I like this one.

Maybe I need another driver. I laid into one today, 10yd. fade (setup for it to come in from the right), just over 260 with virtually no roll. That's just about all I have keeping under control and hitting within 10yds. of my target. I've only had my SS measured a few times. 113 with the FT-3 NV-75X, 116 with a CobraX-speed and 119 with that Titty 975J and the Prolite S. I suppose the 40* weather and the beat up Nike distance/control ball I was using weren't optimal.

My point to the GM at golfsmith was that even though my clubhead speed on the launch monitor was significantly lower than what was measured a week ago that his machine had to be off. I hit a ball with 50% power and it was going at 80mph clubhead speed (this was like uncoiling with gravity) then I turn it up to 100% of my ability and it was still low, but when I let them rip at the range I was what my normal was. they said that there monitor was accurate.

Sorry if I jacked your thread a little Demon. Interesting thing I read from that link WBL put up.... smash factor and it's effect on ball speed. Were you hitting them dead center or were you a little off on your latest trip? I know when I went to the Callaway fitting I was told my ball speed should be easily over 170 if I could hit it dead center. I kept hitting it inside of center but still producing speeds just at 160.

Also I noticed playing with the figures on that site, the launch angle was affecting it a lot. Were you not getting your optimal launch?

I was consistently at 14* and it was hitting the ball slightly above the center, this is where the the supposed perfect place to hit the 905R. I was not off at all, even if I was the swing speed wouldnt be almost 20mph off. Besides, I am right on track with my driver at the range, about 285 carry and probably about 300 with roll.

Here's your reason. Temperature makes a big difference as does the ball.

I'd say the one is accurate and the lower ss one isn't if you can duplicate it on the range or course.

When I was on the launch monitor I was averaging 116 swing speed, but I didn't look at distance. Since then averaging 295-300

Carry? or Carry and roll?

I actually get 2 - 3mph more clubhead speed with my Taylormade 320, the guy at golf galaxy said that it was probably because my 905R's flat huge face is cutting more air and slowing it down, makes sence to me.

No wind flat conditions. Carry and roll, with about 280 carry.

This sounds right for that ss and assume it would be carry distance. What is your ball speed?
