I have ZERO short game.

Unbelievable. Today I drove the ball about the best I can do: hit 12/14 fairways, 250 yards or so, and didn't break 100.

Could chip, but couldn't get the distance right on pitches and wedges, and couldn't make any putts, not even a 3 footer.

I guess I know what I need to practice.

$hit happens... especially in golf. I've had those days too, putter is like a foreign object, I feel like a beagle crapping on briar patch standing over a 4 footer. Not today though. Dropped a 20 footer for birdie and put a bunch of long ones within 6 inches left or right side, perfect speed. Now if I was hitting fairways like you.... Actually my drives weren't too bad overall, I had 3 that were followed by heroics gone bad to put me up to 83. I should have easily broken 80 the way I was rolling it.

Make it with the through-stroke, thats my putting thought for the day.

Better luck next time Doc. One of these days.....

My short game was terrible today, played a new course. Put in 5 bucks in the mail slot, as much golf as you want, impossible to beat. First hole, 330 yard draw, shanked gap wedge, shanked lob wedge, 3 putt. Story of my life.

Well, I played friday. It's amazing how only playing once a week adds a few feet to chips and putts. *sigh* I shot a 76, which is by no means bad, but I was still disappointed.

Mid-terms and finals and all that, getting me bogged down.

I feel your pain. On one hole I hit a delicate 25 yard flop shot over a bunker to a downhill green that ended up four feet from the flag. The next hole I bladed four easy chips back and forth (and back and forth) for an eight on a par three. Aaarrrrggghhhh!!!

That makes me feel a little better.

My worst hole yesterday was a par 5 where I was 1 foot off the green in 3, and ended up with a 10.

Top that!

That's gonna be tough! But I'm sure the next time I play I'll be giving it a go.

Did we play together this week?

I play with a guy that has holes like that all the time. He tenses up around the green and sends the ball all over the place.

For me the short game is all about confidence. I'll bet if you spend some time practicing it'll be ok.

I was so excited about getting out to play last Tuesday that I made the big error of not checking my bag before I set out of the door, and not noticing I'd picked up the wrong wedges from the stack I have in the cupboard that tend to change from round to round...

So instead of the 50, 56 and 60 that I wanted to have with me, I arrived at the first approach shot to a green of the day, looked into my bag and found my 48* (that rarely gets a trip out these days), my 56* sand wedge and the 64* lob wedge that I bought off eBay for a laugh a week or so ago! Made for some fun shots over those first few holes, I can tell you! Calmed down by about the 6 though, and actually ended up good fun. Not sure that 64* will ever see a course again though, even it if *was* fun for the one massive flop shot out of the rough from 20 yards out I managed to use it for!

It is weird that I tend to choke around the greens when I'm playing. I just can't seem to feel any rhythm in the short stroke (insert joke here) like I can with a full swing. It seems like my brain has hard time trusting that the short backswing will produce enough power to get the ball 30 feet to the landing area, so I rush back to the ball and jerk my head, and do all the other things that cause chunks and blades.

Put a 7-iron in my hand from 160 yards and I get compliments on my tempo and rhythm. Give me a wedge from 10 yards and I'm a spastic bundle of nerves.

Hey Doc, can you prescribe us both some Propanolol? I hear it works wonders on the golf course.

Only if you can lick your balls and scratch behind your ear with your hind foot.

I blame the time change: by the time I get off work, it's dark and I can't practice the short game.

I have to give some credit to a short game lesson I got a few years ago. Having a technique to practice led to more confidence around the greens.

I think my favorite part of the game is saving par after a bad approach shot. I guess that makes sense considering all the bad shots I make.

I have one of these somewhere...had it made with a set of Toski's many, many years ago. It has a Rifle Bubble steel stiff shaft.

It has seen very little use.

Anyone who wants to trade for it...hehe....
