lesson learnt!

i went out for 9 today - and learnt something valuable. I have both my R5s (tp and non tp) for sale in the pro shop - so went out with just my 13 degree v-steel 3 wood. I think i hit 2 bad ones - and a couple of smmookin bombs with it! I think that in the summer - i'd get away with not carrying the driver at all.

Anyhow - no golf for 6 weeks, and went 4,6,4,6,4,7 (ouch),6,6,3 for a 46, so 10 over. I was raining pretty bad from the 5th onwards, so i was trudging somewhat - oh - and i fell over on the 6th and got all muddy too!!

Most of us could get by without a driver. The gain (for those of use with swing speeds under 100-110mph) of a driver over a 3 wood is about 20 yards. Plus, we tend to take a more controlled swing with a 3 wood, maybe because the head is so much smaller, so the ball has a better chance of landing in the fairway. And, it gives us a chance to substitute another club, like an additional wedge, without having to drop a useable club.

Yep. I find myself using my driver less and less. That's not to say that if I were a good golfer (single-digit) I wouldn't use my driver more. But my 4-wood is usually all I need OFF THE TEES FROM WHICH I PLAY.

Isnt it amazing how much interest there is in a club that isnt even used that much! I only use my driver if I can reach it on a par 4 or really long par 5's . It is amazing how drivers are so expensive and there is so much new technology advancing them so much but they are used so very little, not to even mention that they hardly even use them on the PGA Tour.

I have to argue that point. I see the tour players using their drivers a lot. The courses (especially since Tiger came along) are so long now that those guys have no choice. Bombs away!

There are certainly exceptions, but I think the driver is a very important club to them. Not the most important - that would be the flatstick - but important nonetheless.

I use my driver off of most driving teeboxes(not par 3s). But I have the confidence in it to do so.

Putting the driver up for most of the summer helped my game immensely.

I put all the driver practice into the irons.
