A little better

I picked up a 512 card for my camera to get more video myself. This stuff is very useful. It started getting little dark and the video came out a lot darker. I was really trying to work on my turn and not taking the club as far past parallel. It's a little better. My drives were very good at the end. The last one I hit was just a moster, sailed over the 250 sign, dead straight into the woods. I had to try to show that one. Comments welcome but I can pretty well see what I'm still doing wrong. Not easy to correct faults that have been built over 3 years and tens of thousands of swings.

I cant get over how much movement you have in your swing. Just turn yourself in one big coil and youll hit the ball so much solider just from that. That coil move will also help get rid of your ott and get you releasing more down the line instead of the ott release we share.

OTT seems to be the be all and end all to us eh?

Yeah, I'm not expecting to fix it in one day. I can't shorten that swing up for the life of me. Even when I think I'm 3/4 swinging it's still too long. I basically think I'm doing everything too early in the downswing and most of it's due to that overswing, which is caused by god knows what. I can see that if I held the lag another foot down into the swing, stopped the backswing a foot earlier, it would be a whole lot better. I creamed that drive though. I was taking the club to the top and trying to stretch as far as my torso would go.

EZ I notice when you hit your clubs harder you tend to slide more. the first part of the video when you were hitting the 7-iron you didnt slide a lot but when you got to the three iron you were really starting to slide and then driver forget it you were a wild man.

Yeah, I can't stop it. I talked to the pro, Rick, while I was there. I'm going to schedule a lesson soon. A big part of the problem is when I hit a few bad shots I go back to what works. The ugly slide move has gotten me to a shaky sub 10 but won't ever get me to a solid sub 5. Too much room for error in that swing.

Rick seems like a really cool guy. He still competes as a Senior. He was checking out my driver. He had a 905T with a Proforce 75. He claims to avg. between 280-290. I gotta see that. He's my height but even thinner and about early 50's. I really need some drills or something to fix that slide, it's soooo ingrained.

That driver shot is a little dark.

Your right elbow, on the down the line driver shot, still needs to "drop down". It looks a bit like it is still going "out" toward the ball.

Go out and try to skip a rock. Either across a pond, or down the street. Or just mimic it in your living room. Your hip fires first and your right elbow comes in toward your side while your right wrist holds the angle. Freeze it right at the bottom before you "let go" of the rock. Now compare this position to your position with a club at the same point.

Or, without moving your hips, try to mimic hitting a baseball off a tee to right-center field, maybe 10-20 yards right of the center field line. If you swing your right elbow "out" as it looks like you are doing, the tee-ball will have to go left. There is no way to get the end of the bat on the ball to make it go right.

BUT, if you take your right elbow down to your body on the INSIDE and "swing out" to knock the tee-ball to right-center, you CAN get the bat on the ball and should be able to knock it that direction every time.

This is without hip movement. Very simple.

In the golf swing, we don't freeze our hips. They are cleared before we get to impact. Thus, if you make the same swing movements to hit the ball just right of centerfield, because of the cleared hips, you are actually hitting it straight.

On the backswing you create a lot of "good space" with your right elbow getting out behind you and getting to a nice 90*. On the downswing though, you want to "get rid of" all that space as fast as you can. The faster that space "disappears" the faster the clubhead is moving back to impact.

By taking the club "out" toward the ball from the top, it is taking a less direct route to the ball. If the right elbow drops to your side, taking the club with it obviously, it is taking a more correct, and faster, direct route to the ball.

I hope that helps. Keep up the vids. And also save them somewhere so month or two, or year, from now you can go back and see what you "were" doing. Also, if you ever "lose it" later on, you can go back to some video you made when you were hitting it well and be able to see what you were doing "right".

Thanks Augster. You know I had done this little drill where I swung just my arms, hands about a foot apart, last year. It was around the time I got my R7. I distinctly remeber over a 2 week period I drove a 315yd. par twice, a 293yd. par 4 twice and had a drive over trees and a brook leaving me a PW into a 462 yd. par 5. I was clearing and taking that space like you said. I remember it feeling like I was hitting it out of my side. Too bad I don't have those swings on video. Of course my iron striking and short game was crap back then. I could hit 5 290yd. drives in a round and still shoot over 100.

I hate to pour scorn on your swing EZ but not much has changed, on of the reasons your 3 iron went 215 was because at impact you have shut it down to something akin to a 1 iron due to your other problems, if you watch through impact on your 3 iron you can see your left arm chicken winging which is indicative of a shut face at impact and lack of release,

A couple of suggestions i would give to you would be to flare your left foot out to stop your left side sliding and collapsing and also do a lot of mirror work whereby you stand infront of the mirror and swing to hip height whilst watching and then close your eyes and swing back to where you feel hip height is and i bet you will be way past it!, this drill done over a course of time will teach you how to feel exactly where the club head and hands are.

I have no idea how you hit the ball straight, but you seem to, so that means you must have either good reflex's or co-ordination so imagine what you could do witha simpler/less crazy swing.

Thanks again. I'm going to get a mirror soon. My dad has 3 of them in his basement sitting around, 6 1/2' x 3 1/2' . I noticed the left arm also. I have been pulling the swings apart frame by frame. I probably have quite a few that look better, but I hit the ball like total crap. This is a big reason I need lessons, I don't know what to commit to and just revert back to what works. I must have hit 10 crap 3irons, trying to just turn and then drop the club inside, nice and easy. Got frustrated, took a few practice swings, laid into the last 2 and they were slight draws, as high as a 3iron goes, over the top of the 200marker. Same thing with the driver, push after push, then lay into it, hit a dozen in a row right down the pipe. I just don't get it. This stuff is driving me mad.

Just tell me one thing. What did the golf balls do to you that you wanted to kill them so badly? Seriously, that over the top thing has got to stop, as does the overswing and reverse pivot. If I were you I'd try and fix the reverse pivot first, as that could be the cause for the overswing which in turn is a cause for OTT.
