Thread: If you're having trouble with half-loads and you're using Firefox

  1. If you're having trouble with half-loads and you're using Firefox

I think I've found a solution for Firefox users. I have yet to investigate a change for Internet Explorer.

In Firefox, type in about:config in the address bar and hit enter to load. You'll see a page with a bunch of stuff, not exactly like the picture you're about to see because I've used a filter to find what I needed to change:

For everyone looking at this, they should after finding that highlighted line in my picture, they should see for network.http.accept-encoding a value of gzip, deflate.

You can double click that line, and blank out the value. By doing that, you should turn off gzip handling by Firefox. Close out Firefox and reload to have the new setting take effect.

I hope I'm not speaking too soon but I did this and everything seems to be working again. Good Job RBB.
There's really no point in listening to other People. They're either going to be agreeing with you or saying stupid stuff. Dogbert

I've still got my fingers crossed, because there have been other periods where there were no problems. But this has been the longest where every time I've clicked everything has loaded okay.

  4. Sweet!

    Great find RBB!

  5. Everything has worked fine for me since doing this.

Sling, you definitely want to advise your server provider that there might be something squiffy about the zlibs.

I still haven't found a way for Internet Explorer to turn off gzip handling. :( So you will want the server host to check the zlibs and fix them, if that's the problem.

Yeah, edit to add you definitely want your server host to make sure the zlibs are correct ones. You'll see your bandwidth usage go up greatly if we continue to browse without gzip enabled.

  6. I gave them a link to this post, hopefully they take a look and can get this figured out once and for all.

  7. I haven't had a problem since disabling gzip in Firefox. I'm rather confident that the problem is somewhere in the zlibs on the server, since at all other sites that I browse where gzip is used I've never had any problems.

  8. Hmmm. Okay, so now I move on to the next part of things, where I reset the string value in the about:config for Firefox to its defualt of gzip, deflate. So far, I haven't had any partial loads or any code showing through. We'll see what happens.

  9. Ahh, good.

I just got confirmation, with the about:config reset to the default values and using gzip, I just got a half-load. The server's zlibs are screwed up somewhere, somewhy, somehow.

  10. I've discovered a problem for any of you who use gmail. If you turn off the gzip handling in Firefox, you won't be able to access your gmail account.
