Last Day In Uniform

Well,

I took off my uniform for the last time yesterday and today was my first official day of retirement from the Army.

I don't know, I don't think it's sunk in yet. All I have ever known over the past 20 years is Army and today it is over. It felt kinda weird waking up and not having to put on a uniform and go to work. I did however 'celebrate' by playing golf.

Any retirees here deal with a similiar issue? Does it get better or worse? I start a new job in about 3 weeks, will still be working around Soldiers and tanks just in a different capacity and I will have a 9 to 5 job. I think the one thing I look foward to most is being able to sleep in past 4:30am.

Anyway, it's a good feeling in an odd way.

Robert

Congratulations, and a heart felt "Thank You" for all of the sacrifices you and your brothers/sisters in arms have done to ensure that we are able to enjoy the freedoms that we do.

Another thank you, very much.

You will need to fill in your time with golf, booze, and women! Well, that's what I would do anyway,

The Booze... I'm not as young as I once was and can't handle the booze as well

The Women... If I can get my wife to buy off on this, I'm game

Tell it's your caddy that keeps you from drinking?

Seriously, just golf 36 a day from now on. Or collect snakes, and be a crazy snake man.

Your choice.

Not when your day doesn't end until around 5 or 6.

Thank you for your years of service, it is much appreciated.

As far as the retirement side, my father spent 20+ years in the Army prior to retiring in '81, then another 20+ in the private sector. He finally retired for good 2 years ago. He seemed to adapt well, and really enjoy the civilian side. Although after retiring from both, he soon realized he need to change his phone plan to "Unlimited" calling.

Just watch out, there is such a thing for many as too much golf for some. I am now in a position where I play around 5 times a week. Although anything more than that, at least to me, borders on being more of a commitment and I tend to almost lose focus on my game. I have actually set it up so I intentionally play fewer rounds of 18 holes, and more of just 9 hole leagues and gatherings. Then maybe get out a little to practice on the side.

Thank you for your service. As much as I am against the war in Iraq, I am very much behind our military men and women. We have chosen the wrong way to fight the War on Terror.

You probably now have the best of both worlds. You are working in a familiar environment, with familiar faces - but don't have to worry about the chain-of-command.

What is your new job?

Thanks everyone. It was a good feeling waking up this morning (though I still woke up at 0430 for some reason ) and not having to goto work! YeeHaw!

Bravo, I will be working with procurement and testing of new components, upgrades and urban kits for the M1A1/M1A2.

You can still get 9 in, maybe 18 if the course is close to work.

Thanks for your service, and be proud of it!!

Sounds like a fun job...do you get to blow anything up? If you do, I'd like to come along as a consultant....

I always enjoyed firecrackers and M80's as a kid....

Robert - I did 22+ years. The hardest thing for me after I retired was trying to figure out what to wear every morning.
