P-51's crash at EAA in Oshkosh

Here is the video. Crashed Friday after simulated air race making formation landing. I was driving by about this time. Didn't go this year.

Tis a sad day to lose another fellow pilot and a piece of history all at once. I feel sorrow for the families of those involved as the investigation that will follow will not answer their questions and expose them to an ever hungry media.

I was there when this had happened. I had gone with my guitarists family cause they had an extra ticket. It was a horrific sight to see. Being a pilot of a Cessna 172 its really scary to see something like that as close as it was. We were up against the ropes and they were flying directly over us.

I've been a witness to an airshow crash myself, and it's almost never anything but a tragic mistake. Somebody miscalculates something, and the consequences are immediate. Looks like the trailing pilot just didn't leave enough room in front of him. They said they were doing a "formation landing", but if it was a formation landing they would have been coming in two abreast, or at least staggered, right?

I am not pilot, but it looks like the trailing plane ran up the ass of the first one...

That's why I don't understand it. I'm not a pilot, but I believe that there is no landing procedure that calls for two planes to land directly in line with each other unless they separated by a good distance. It looked like these two were trying to land close together, which is OK, but only if the runway is wide enough to land two abreast and slightly staggered.

Again, not a pilot, but what I saw them attempt makes no sense to me, since there is no margin for any error at all.
