Computer Geek Question

Awhile back I had downloaded a very easy to use freeware that reduced the size of my video clips.

Can anyone recommend a system that does that?

Agreed. So hard to deal with when you're not Apple-fied.

I'll pass this on to some other Quicktime fan.

I had a real easy to use free editor that would do amazing compression. I've since had a hard disk failure and will need to DL again. I can't remeber the name.

None of the format converters I deal with are "free". But I have used one called TMPGEnc from PEGASYS that can do AVI to MPEG1 pretty well (for free). MPEG-1 compresses the hell out video, and done properly can look OK (but just OK). Thing is, you would have to figure out how to save your videos as AVI's instead of MOV's.

There are others out there that claim to "convert any video to any other format, yada, yada, yadda." Like I said, I don't deal with free, so I can't really help you with those. If you're willing to pay a bit for TMPGEnc 2.0, you get more extensive capabilities, including the ability to encode in MPEG-2 (playable by almost any computer, and capable of quite good quality).

Lot's of people claim to be able to convert to MPEG-4, the latest and greatest, but there'a problem with licensing. I would steer clear for now unless you want to specifically create content for cell phones, iPods, etc. Then get TMPGEnc 4.0

TMPGEnc is used by a lot of video professionals. It's really the de facto standard for inexpensive format conversion.

One other thing. Quicktime can do a good job of creating fairly small MOV files. But you have to pay for Quicktime Pro...

The age-old conundrum. I want it want it to work...and I want it for free...

The free version of TPMG is the one that I used also. I was always converting from AVI tho.
