Playing the lottery.

Government statistics show there are about 1.7 automobile caused fatalities for every 100,000,000 vehicle-miles. If you drive one mile to the store to buy your lottery ticket and then return home, you have driven two miles. Thus the probability that you will join this statistical group is 2 x 1.7/100,000,000 = 0.000000034. This can also be stated as “1 in 29,411,765”. Thus, if you drive to the store to buy your Powerball ticket, your chance of being killed (or killing someone else) is about 5 times greater than the chance that you will win the Powerball Jackpot.

I buy mine for 20 drawings at a time, so I'm starting to like my odds alot better

I like the guy that only buys one when the jackpot is like $140,000,000, as if $20,000,000 is just not good enough to risk that $1 and he would return it for lack of sufficient funds.

Your odds don't increase buying more tickets. If there were a set number of tickets sold, then yes. Otherwise, with multiple people able to buy the same numbers as you, your odds are the same.

I'd rather play roulette, less #'s. Plus starting from $1 and hitting the # 6 times in a row would be 2billion dollars.

I meant because I only drive once every twenty times, my odds are actually 4 times more likely in winning the lottery as compared to being killed while driving to get them. As opposed to 5 times more likely to be killed while going to buy them that the rest of you suckers are getting by going every week.

I only buy one per drawing, and the fact that I usually don't ever check the numbers until I find them in my wallet about 6 months after the last drawing on the ticket should tell you what I think my odds are of winning

edit 1 - which reminds me I should probably check them, let's see, I have one that had it's last drawing on December 29th. If you don't hear from me again......

edit 2 - looks like your stuck with me at least until May

If you don't play you can't win. Pretty simple.

And if you dont play, you cant waste your money filling other peoples pockets.

The Lottery is the biggest waste of money i can think of (not to mention the biggest scam of today). Lets do this, you put 25$/week down on the lottery, i will put 25$ a week in my pocket when we are 90 i have 100% chance of having money in my pocket(barring some catastraphy) and what are your odds of winning the lottery?

Thats a very interesting fact Eracer about the driving statistics...

Actually, E, if you put $25/week into an interest-bearing account, you'll end up with a good sum in the account at the age of 90.

I don't mind the Lottery giving false hope to millions of low-income people who don't understand that it's just another form of taxation.

What bugs me (here in Florida) is that the bastards keep telling us that lottery proceeds have contributed "$4 billion for education!" Part of the deal was that lottery proceeds had to be put into the education budget. That's great, except that they take out the same amount of money (or more) and move it to other departments, like the "Fat Cat Lobbyists Pet Project" department.

Yeah, but i already have the advantage by just keeping the money, i wouldnt want them to feel bad when my 25$/week turned into a couple mil by that time...

lol. I do this. Though ours don't get near as high as 140 mil.

I only buy a ticket when the jackpot is high. I figure alot of other people do this as well, thus reducing my chance of winning. Since I'm throwing my money away, I figure I should throw it as far as possible. The longest possible shot at the biggest possible payout.
