Gas Mileage - For Real

I put 4.1 gallons of gas in my car a few days ago and set the trip odometer. I was on empty and the fuel light had come on. I drove it until again, the fuel light came on. The conditions were a mix of city and highway, "normal driving" for me, which is a bit agressive, not optimal for fuel mileage I guess.

'99 Prelude w/2.2 Vtec is getting 28.05 mpg.

Anyone else know the real mileage thier vehicle is getting? Not what the manufacturer says, they'd try to tell you a Hummer gets 19 on the highway. Till you realize it's more like 3 when you go back up that hill.

I'm trying to drive no more than 5mph over the speed limit and am getting 24 in a 02 Mustang with a 3.8. Before that however I was getting 19 or so. This little project has also added about 7 minutes to my drive to work though.

My 4.0L V-6 4x4 gets 19mpg on long trips. About 15mpg in the city. Sucks.

My Santa Fe gets around 18-20mpg, but I only fill it about every 2-3 weeks. Gas went up 75 cents between my last two fillups I believe. My wifes Pilot gets about the same, probably closer to the 18 and she drives mainly Highway miles.

To be honest, both get about what they specify in between their city use and Highway.

My old Trooper which was rated at 18 got around 14-15

edit 1 - We have even weighed better mileage on a smaller car for my wife, although for her daily commute, safety presents a whole other issue for the road she drives, where paying a few bucks extra for gas seems to be a small investment for the small amount saved.

My folks FJ is getting about an average of 26, which is combo of offroading (my doing, hehe), street, and highway. Not bad for a SUV.

My car? 08 Corolla, about 36-38 street and 44 highway. Which I think is a tad more than factory.

My Yukon XL is getting 18 in town and 20 on the highway. The Grand Cherokee is doing a tad worse.

V6 Mustang is getting 20 in town, 29 on the highway...exactly what it said on the sticker when I bought it. A year later, same engine, same car, the estimates were brought down to 17 and 26... Id have to really drive it like an idiot to get those #s.

05 Chevy Equinox gets anywhere from 19-23 mpg.

98 Chevy Tracker 27-30 mpg

08 Kawasaki 250 Ninja, 52 mpg...rather disappointed in this mileage as I thought it would be higher, although it is still being broken in as it only has 1000 miles on it.

04 Yamaha R1, 37-45 mpg depending on how hard I twist the throttle

96 Harley Wideglide, 42-44 mpg.

Ezra, that is no way to check your mileage.

You cannot rely on the "light"

Fill the fecker, set the trip meter. Fill it again at empty or after using 1/4 tank or whatever THEN do the math.

I would never count on the low fuel light to go off at the exact same point every time.

I'm thinking your off by about 6 mpg.

I get 14.8 btw.

Last two tanks were almost exactly the same, 25.2mpg, 2007 Ford Fusion 4 cyl. I tend to have a heavy foot.

I've heard the FJ is a rollicking mess on the road, but very good offroad. Is that your impression?

Its pretty nice offroad, but this one has a few aftermarket parts. As far as on the street, I've found no complaints with it. Driven it a little on highway and all that and didn't mind it.

Oh, and the F4i gets 45-50.
