question for fisherman

My shimano corvalus reel is broken. I took it apart and couldn't find a problem, but it still won't reel or freespool. Anyway, it's old and it's time to replace it.

Has anybody used an Abu ambassadeur Silver or Black Max? I've taken a cast or two with my uncle's, but has anybody used one long term? Any thoughts at all would be appreciated.

I use the Black Max and really like it. I mostly do stream and river fishing here in New Mexico. Not a big lake fisher without alcohol.

I fish for bass, walleye and pike, but mostly bass.

Your best bet would be a mid range casting reel like the Quantum Accurist 500PT (new version) or the Shimano Citica D-Series. Both of these can be found for $79 and $99, respectively at most online stores, like cabelas and BPS. I own two Citicas (100DSV and 200DPV) and one Accurist 500PT. Lots of people swear by shimanos, but I find that quantum is the best bang for the buck. And while my two citicas are great for thier intended application, I feel that my accurist can cover it all. I dont really know what you are going to use it for, but as long as your going to use 10-12lb test line, and lure weights over 1/4 an ounce. youll be fine. Also, what kind of rod are you using (length, action, power).

you can check out TackleTour.com ~ The Angler's Source for Tackle Reviews and Tackle News! for great reviews, and their forum which you will for sure find an answer.

Thanks for the replies guys.

James: I'm looking for something general purpose, but I'll mostly be going for bass. Rod is 6'6" Fast action Medium Heavy power. I'll take a look at the quantum.

Whats the weight on yours?

I caught a 10 inch rainbow with a 3/4, was so much fun. Kinda tough though, usually using a 6.

Obviously I was thinking of a fly rod here, not rod and reel. Silly me.

Haven't bought a new fishing reel, at least a baitcaster in quite some time. I will say I love my Ryobi reels. I have one or two that I've had for 20 years or so! Still working pretty decent.

My father loved his Quantum reels. He filled his boat with them. They're very nice equipment.

I will say, I have NO IDEA what's out there today though. Now I wanta go fishin'!

I've never fished with a 3 or 4 weight before, usually use a 5. Don't get to fly fish much though.

Quantum makes solid gear. Don't overlook some of the Daiwa products either. They have the best drag system in the business.

Dont listen to this guy...all he knows how to do is drink beer and captain a shrimp boat...

I have three abu ambassador spinning reels, and all three are spectacular. My bait casters are...ugh...i'll have to go look but i believe one is an abu and the other is a daiwa...ill check for sure when i get home tonight.

I will admit, I'm mostly a fly fisherman. But I still think the Black Max is nice.
