Thread: Oops!!! anyway to fix this?

  1. Oops!!! anyway to fix this?

    I am such a stupid.

I broke one side of an out-of-print CD. The crack goes all the way through.

What will happen if I put a piece of tape on the topside and try to copy it? Will it fly apart, or just not work?

Do you know the difference between a BMW and a porcupine? The porcupine has its' pricks on the outside.

Do not put tape on it! You might try a thin super glue.

If the crack indeed goes all the way through, then the mylar layer has been broken, and each time the laser tries to read the pits, it will refract and cause an error. The question is whether the player's error-correction circuit can handle as many bit errors as will occur.

    Audio CD?

Not likely to work with tape. You could likely try and make a copy and ignore errors but even if it does copy, the problem you would run into is that the sectors on the crack are going to create pauses or skips in the music. You could likely try and make a copy and ignore errors. Maybe try burning it off to MP3's, but again, I'm guessing you will either have either pauses in the music or it simply won't work. Probably better to just try and find another copy.

If it is a software type CD, and the manufacturer is still around they may replace it for you.

If it can't be fixed and is out of print try a used record/cd store. I'm sure they have all of Barry Manilow's albums.

Lawrence Welk isn't big band--don't derogate it like that! Glenn Miller is my man. Can you honestly hear "In the Mood" and NOT want to dance?
