Thread: A Birthday to remember. Unfortunately.

  1. #1

    A Birthday to remember. Unfortunately.

I write to you all from my laptop using the hospital wi-fi.

    Was having a fantastic weekend.

Last weekend had been very trying, as my significant other had a seizure while at work, and was pretty shaken up. I got the call from her coworkers while at the driving range with MGP, and had to rush off to be with her. Over the course of the week she was able to kinda get things going again. We had a camping trip planned for this weekend, to try and celebrate my birthday which is on the 13th. but we thought it best to cancel it, in light of the events. She was released from the ER later that afternoon, but wasn't given any prescriptions, she was referred to a nuerologist, and told to get an appointment within the next couple days, but couldn't be seen until the 13th.

I Had this Friday off because of Good Friday...so just took it easy, got in 9 holes...then went and chilled at the significant others house....got yelled at by my parents for staying out a little too late, no biggie. all in all a good night.

Saturday, significant other surprises me with a nice picnic..and we just have a good time until she has to go to church..I let her go do that and go destroy the Golden Corral buffet with a buddy. and thats pretty much the night.

Sunday was the big surprise day for me. She took me to a KC Royals game v. the Yankees. The game, albeit a bit wet and rainy, was awesome. Royals actually pulled one out of their asses late, and got the win...first win since they refinished Kauffman Stadium. and it is NICE!

Since she can't drive with a recent history of seizures, we had planned for her to spend sunday night at my house, so that I could take her to school on Monday. We had got home from the game and everything was going well, we both had big tests to study for, and we did. We threw in a movie that my sister had bought me for my bday "The Rock" with Nick Cage and Sean Connery.

Before I know it, she starts acting very strange...as if someone is out to get her and she wants to hide. I try and get her to snap out of things, but she ends up seizing again. All i can do is really try and grab her and keep her on her side, and from hitting her head or flying off the bed. I had heard that you're supposed to try and keep them from biting/choking on their own tongue, which I tried to do, but her jaw was locked pretty good...and all I ended up doing in that was getting my finger cut pretty bad.

I was able to hold her until she came out of it. after which my parents were able to rush over and help, while my sister called 911.

Thankfully the EMT, police, and firestation all showed up within a matter of minutes. I was able to grab some stuff, and hitch a ride in the abulance with them.

She was definitely much calmer this time around, which I am thankful for. Much more coherent.

I ended up going back home, and grabbing all her stuff, and got back to the hospital about 3am. Where I spent the night with her...got maybe an hour of sleep...then at 8, went to school and took my Calc Test...totally aced it, and have since been here in the room with her as she's been going through all the MRI's, CT scans, and EEG's.

    Happy Bday me!

I have never felt so weak, and powerless in all my life. This one will take a good deal of time to get over. Thanks for letting me write it out here.

    -Carl 'YG' Clark.

My youngest step-son has childhood epilepsy, which has been well controlled with medication until recently....he has had 2 seizures within 1 month of each other (we had gone 18 months previously). The doctors think he's outgrowing his dosage, and are upping the dosage accordingly.

I share this so you'll know you're not alone.

My thoughts and prayers are with you and your lady, Carl.

    And, Happy Birthday my friend!!!

I am kind of at a loss for words as I have never had to endure anything like that.

That's rough C. I've got some advice, as I just got back from the hospital visiting my cousin (close as my sister though). I recommend Starbucks and lots of movies to keep her spirits up while in the hospital. It is hard but you all just have to believe that it will work out. Really believe it. Sounds as if something like this can be controlled with the right medication. Good luck to you both, especially her.

    And happy birthday!

Scary week, brother. Horrible to watch that happen to someone you care so much about.

If I was to venture a guess, I'd say that these sudden seizures- particularly ones in such close proximity with respect to time-are related to some new and reversible event. It is possible, but uncommon, for a serious chronic condition to appear suddenly and with such high frequency.

I cannot perform a differential for all the causes of seizures, but they're scarier looking than they are medically. She's right where she needs to be, and I really think, and hope, it's something relatively minor that can be cured without a great deal of stress.

There is of course the possibility of it being something more serious- but even then, she's right where she needs to be. Given the circumstances, this is the BEST case scenario.

Re: A Birthday to remember. Unfortunately.

Thanks for the well-wishes guys. Wasn't really looking for sympathy, just wanted to get stuff off my chest...but its appreciated either way.

I'm back home and so is she. Got discharged around 7pm last night. Guess they're going to start her on some medication because her EEG came up with some irregularities. Can't remember what exactly the medication was, I was on about an hour of sleep when the nuerologist finally met with her. Hopefully things will start to clear up.

I feel like an idiot for even thinking of starting to feel down on myself. Not because it happened on my bday, or to my GF...just the impending sense of sorrow....But Just the wave after wave of great support that I've received from my good friends and family has just taught me how truly fortunate I am.

    Thank You, All of You.

Wishing you and the lady the best!! Some of the things that seem most difficult in life are those issues over which we have no control. You will need to get rested up, yourself, to be able to assist her as she needs it.

As always, Carl, you know I'm not too far away. If there is ANYTHING you need, please don't be bashful!!!!!
Blessed to have a bag full of trustworthy friends who have provided this old man with hundreds of hours enjoying the great game of golf.
