Computer shopping next month...

Suggestions?

I have a 5 year old Gateway that has been rock solid but is now suffering some fatal flaws.

I am NOT going to build one.

What else should I look at besides Dell and Gateway?

why won't you build one? not saying that you should (you should), but why the adamant refusal?

Not enough time, not enough interest and with the price of OEM comps these days it seems that the savings would be minimal.

I just bought a Dell and upgraded some stuff on it from stock. Video card, 17" digital LCD monitor, extra RAM, ect.

Paid less than 800CDN for it and it does way beyond anything I'm gonna need.

I priced out computers around here for nearly a month, nothing could touch the Dell when it came to price. The only minus is the 80GB HD, but I can buy a 200GB for less than 80 bucks, so it's not a worry.

Tiger Direct sells some cheap shiz. Try them. I've bought from their Canadian store many times with nothing but great results. Check them out.

I've often considered buying from TigerDirect.ca, but I can never justify the price of shipping. It's always like 4 times the price of whatever I want to buy.

My brother bought his projector from them and I think they charged him about $60 or so to ship it. Like...wtf!

You should probably look at alienware.com They're amazing, but fairly expensive. I have an alienware laptop.

Yup like Rock I'd recommend Dell, their customer service is excellent. I've dealt with them both in a business and personal capacity and can't fault them.

I'm leaning towards Vision on the reccommendation on another site.

I need a fairly powerful machine for gaming and I can get a sweet one with a 21inch flat panel monitor for $1800.

Don't forget sales tax

Dell charges sales tax on shipments to States where they have a retail presence (not all states). When I buy I have my son buy it (Arkansas) no sales tax & saves enough to buy a new Driver.

I bought an hp from TigerDirect for - $400 last year, and it has been solid. Around 3Ghz, yadda yadda... Great PC and didn't break the bank.

Silver,

I bought a motherboard, video card, sound card, case, RAM and a set of speakers from Tiger last fall and paid 17 bucks for shipping. And that was insured. It came in 3 days right to my door.

Shipping for a full system with a monitor is 35 bucks.

I think your brother got a parking cone shoved up his ass there. That, or projectors get special shipping privledges, I dunno.

Never had trouble with Tiger in the past at all, and shipping prices are one of the things that drew me there. It sucks when you buy a USB cable off E-bay for 50 cents, and pay 17 bucks for shipping from some schmuck in Ontario.

I know you don't want to build your own, but if you want a gaming machine you'll save tons building it yourself. http://www.newegg.com is an excellent site for parts.

But if I needed a PC and didn't want to build it, I'd go with Dell. Check their outlet center and look for one of their XPS boxes. I think you get a 90 day warranty with an outlet PC, but have the option to upgrade it. The best time to check is during the very early hours of the morning. People grab the outlet deals as soon as they show up during normal hours.

Another not so brand name builder is http://ecollegepc.com/ I haven't had any personal experience with them, but have a few friends that went here for gaming machines.

Rock, I might be embellishing a bit, but whenever I've looked, I haven't been impressed by shipping. Maybe it's just the stuff I've looked at.
