Re: Anyone still shooting?

Not remotely as good as your pictures, Lyle (which are fantastic), but here are some pictures I took this past spring from around my family's cabin (NW Wisconsin) and surrounding lakes.

My camera isn't a fancy DSLR or anything like that, but it's a fairly nice 3-4 year old Fuji Finepix S3000 (3.2 megapixel, 6x optical zoom).

Re: Anyone still shooting?

Fitzpatrick,

I hope I am not out of line. Here are a few pointers I was given that will tremendously help your landscape shots.

- dont place the horizon line in the middle of the frame. Try placing it at the 1/3 line from either the top or bottom.

- avoid shooting mid day. One hour after sun up and 1 hour prior to sundown are your best light. Shadows will be softer and the light will be a more pleasing color.

- when you have an object in a scene (like the duck for example) try to avoid placing it in the center of the frame. Try dividing the frame into 9 boxes and placing your subject along the these lines, preferably at the points they intersect (the rule of thirds).

- if possible try and include some fore ground interest. This helps create scale and generally helps the eye move through the photo better. This isnt always possible however.

Good luck and happy shooting

Lyle

Re: Anyone still shooting?

Fantastic pics lyle...

I don't get out and try to shoot 'artistically' anymore. I just don't think i have the eye for it. I'm not an artistic person anyway. I keep trying to tell myself that a new lens will help....but then i see pictures from peoples P&S's on photography forums and realize no, its me, not the camera...

I really enjoy seeing your photo's though. They are fantastic!

Not out of line at all, Lyle, I'm always eager to learn better ways to do things, especially when I do not know that much about something (in this case, I don't really know much more than point and shoot).

Something I was told about my particular camera (which may be true of other cameras too I suppose) is to use the autofocus in such a way to capture the optimum light before focusing in on my subject matter (the duck or treeline). In the case of the duck, I should have focused on some other area of light (I think I want to remember that it was the trees behind it) so that I wouldn't catch quite as much of the light coming off the water.

Thanks for the advice about the horizon line. It's something I did not think of before, but now that I think back on it (and look at your pictures), I don't ever remember seeing the horizon in the middle of the picture.

Thanks again!

Fitz

Lyle, I've said it before & I'll say it again, you're a good shooter. Don't ever let a load of "how it's supposed to be" crap interfere with your instincts!

Re: Anyone still shooting?

great dof with the dear, like em all, think the pumpkin may be my fave

next time, post exifs you fool

great pics btw. I love photography, but I'm hopeless. I've sold the old manual gear, which taught me what I need to know about the technical side, so its all digital now. Just a happy snapper

I will look for half decent shots and put them up, but I don't have many! Just looking through now, some of the 'grabs' I get, high iso just messing at home, are some of my faves, better than many when I really 'try'.

just found this, of no significance, except my son never lets me take pics, I have very few of him, so it means a lot. I find that pixel peeping and getting overly worried about grain, bokeh, whatever, just ruins the enjoyment for me. I've tried learning about this stuff, but I just don't have the time nor talent to use it anyway. Iv'e love to, but can't.

I've got the deer as my desktop background.

Do I pay by cheque or money order, or even Western Union?

Dave,

you summed it up. I dont go out and try to shoot. I just go out for walks and so on and shoot what catches my eye. I then quickly think what I need to do to capture it the way i want to see it when I look back. Then I shoot it and keep walking.

I never even knew you had a son. His name isnt Hogan is it?
