So why is it...

Everyone i meet, when we get on the topic of driving, is a 'safe and considerate' driver?

Yet i cannot count how many times in one commuting day i have to pass people on the right because they are driving in the left lane, almost get hit because someone can't use a blinker, have to jam the brakes because someone couldn't wait 3 seconds for me to go by before they pulled out, can't keep a constant speed, can't keep it in their own lane, can't check blind spots before switching lanes, can't merge at proper speed, etc...

99% of people on the roadways are idiots yet, everyone is a perfect driver....

I will admit, i have absent-mindedly done some stupid things on the roadways, i am no perfect driver. However, if i am in the left lane, i make sure i am passing someone(thats what its for...passing) and if i am not actively passing, i get back in the right lane. I make sure when i merge onto a roadway, i am going the speed of traffic i am merging into.

What are you're three top driving pet peeves?

1. Driving in the left lane the same speed as another car in the right lane...this will make me scream red-faced, chew my steering wheel in half, and pound holes in my dash board...this honestly makes me want to PIT maneuver these people

2. . Pulling out in front of me and causing me to have to slow down. I don't care how close i am, if you can pull out and get up to speed before i catch up, go for it, i couldn't care less. But, if i have to hit the brakes because they just could not wait another 2 seconds for me to go by, i'm pissed. Most of the time, there is NO ONE behind me....2 seconds at the stop sign, and they could have pulled out and taken their sweet time to get up to speed....if i REALLY have to hit the brakes to avoid rear-ending these people i WILL lay on the horn and let them know i am not happy.

3. Merging a freeway well below the speed of traffic on that freeway...this causes so much backup its unbelievable....

I want to hear some ranting!

Re: So why is it...

The exit off the interstate that takes me home you have three lanes so you don't have to stop you can just go and merge in. Well Mcdonalds is across the street so all the fatties have to stop so they can cut across three lanes of traffic to get a double cheeseburger. And it comes out right at the entrance for the Wendy's/Gas Station/Truck Stop all in one emporium so those people are trying to get over and turn. It drives me f'in crazy trying to get off with people stopping and slamming on brakes in the middle of the road...it is stupid.

Re: So why is it...

Great rant.

My theory is that bad drivers don't know they are bad drivers. I have some friends that I have driven with that I have had to say to them "Pick a lane!".

It's crazy what some people do and just think they are part of the flock.

Problem is, being a bad driver now days IS just bing 'part of the flock'. There is so many of them, i fear bad driving is an epidemic.

I have started giving thumbs up and a wave to people who ACTUALLY USE their friggin blinkers....how ****ing hard is it?

Absolutely.

I have to be at work by 8. It normally takes me about 7 minutes to drive to work.

If I leave at 7:30, I get to work at 8:05. If I leave at 7:50, I get there by 8. Way too many lemmings driving like morons to even attempt. How hard is it to a) obey the speed limit by driving at least 75% of what is posted and b) don't do your makeup/use your Blackberry at a red/green light.

Maroons.

Re: So why is it...

Speaking of being on the cell phone....

Riding my motorcycle into the office one day, i am behind an SUV and i could tell the woman was on the phone...driving side by side on a double lane road with another car...she FINALLY gets far enough ahead of the other car i could tell that she was never going to move over so i started passing her on the right but kept a keen eye on her as i knew she was on the phone. I get about to her rear door when she decides she needs the exit....damn near runs me over, i slow and move right just in time to get out of her way....and while on the phone with one hand, she gives ME the one finger salute with the other hand.....WTMF

My biggest Driving Peeve ever! I don't know how many times this has happened to me in the last week alone. Hit the nail on the head with this one Clark!

My other one is in regard to blinkers. The town I live in is full of roundabouts (sp?) and the council is putting in more. Great, IF people used their blinkers!!!!! But they don't so you're constantly playing a guessing game of whether your gonna get sideswiped by some f*cktard who hasn't indicated that they are turning. Sometimes I'll wait until a roundabout completely clears before I move, just so I don't have to run the risk!

Re: So why is it...

Now most of you will probably think I'm full of shit as Ive only been a licensed driver for apprx 3 years. However, been driving for a long ass time. My dad taught me at 7 years old (when I could first get the clutch all the way down in his truck).

I can't ride with my mother, I have to drive. Her driving habits are intolerable. When executing a pass, she likes to leave the cruise on til 10 feet from the car ahead, then hit the break hard to slow to their speed, and then lurch out to the left and gun it. Especially likes to do this when the road is empty, just her and the other car. Can't stand it. She also likes to goose the accelerator at slower speeds. I have to force myself not to look at the tach when she's driving, it's just going up and down, up and down.

Turning left into the right lane or right into the left lane really bugs me too. See that all the time, and I force myself to wait if a car from the opposite direction is turning the same way I am on a 4 lane road. Almost got hit when somebody wasn't paying attention and nearly turned into my right rear door.

Drivers are stoopid!

Re: So why is it...

I drive ~40,000 miles/year. See lots of folks out there who shouldn't even be on the roadway.

If you are driving at or below the speed limit in the left hand lane... GET YOUR A** OFF THE ROAD!!! Nothing irritates me more than someone "parked" in the left hand lane. Kept track for a couple years. Something like 170 drivers. Well over 70% were female. Over 50% were on cell phones.

If you don't have the physical ability, mental capacity, or general courtesy to use turn signals... GET YOUR A** OFF THE ROAD!!

Green lights are not STOP lights!! If you need to slow down or stop at a green light... GET YOUR A** OFF THE ROAD!!!

We have right turn on red, here. That law was enacted to keep traffic moving. However, part of that law is "after yielding right of way to oncoming traffic, you may turn right on red". If I'm going through a GREEN light and you make a right turn on red in front of me... the front bumper of my 4WD Silverado will look awfull big in your rear view mirror for the next few blocks or miles!!!

When sitting at a stop light or entering a parking lot, I don't want to hear your ghetto blasting, vulgarity laced, rap music breaking the sound barrier next to me. You have every right that I do to be on the street. You DO NOT have the right to invoke your pathetic choice of a means to early deafness on me or other drivers. My wife or grandkids should not be made listen to the filth you label as music. Get a life, scumbag, and use a little courtesy when listening to your sound system that cost more than the piece of junk you had it installed in.

I can drive in large metro areas and not have the challenges presented here at home. We have a state university, a military installation, and a large rural/farm population. Between college kids on cell phones and playing graba**... military dependents not familiar with our local area... geriatrics... farmers who haven't had their grain truck over 30 mph in the past 30 years... driving in our fair city can be fun. Common sense is non-existent. Common courtesy is non-existent.

Thanks! Now that my blood pressure is up.....

Re: So why is it...

I suspect some drivers know they are irritating other drivers; but just don't care. I offer my late mother-in-law as an example.

During the late seventies the speed limit was restricted to 55 mph (a key point to the story) on the Interstate Highways. My MIL would often drive from Florida to Georgia to visit our family. She would always rant about all the other motorists speeding and passing her on the right. A few questions revealed her driving technique.

As soon as she hit the Interstate, she immediately moved to the left lane; because, in her words, "Those big old trucks have made the right lane too rough to drive". She also said that she always set the cruise control on 56 mph so that she wouldn't impede traffic. In her mind, driving 1 mph over the limit meant that she should never be passed.

I tried to explain that the right lane was for slower traffic and the left lane was for passing; but I might as well have been talking to a wall. Her stance was that the right lane was for trucks...and, that "slower traffic" meant those cars driving under the speed limit. She further maintained that the cost of her license tag each year was a highway tax and she had paid for the right to drive on the whole highway...not just the right side.
