Do you know the difference between a BMW and a porcupine? The porcupine has its' pricks on the outside.

Hey, I stick to sheep only. Deer aren't my cup of tea.

that would suck, but i bet in such a highly unlikely event i doubt they would do anything. he could get a hefty one though,

but they sell tags according to antler and antlerless, so even a gender confused deer would still be legal as long as he had the antler tag. at least thats how it works in kc...

i'm still mad we couldn't find the deer i shot last year

Way back in the dark ages when I was a kid, I worked with my great-uncle, the Game Warden, during the deer hunts. As long as the deer had some kind of spike, it was legal for hunting.

Once a year, there was a doe day. Only non antlered deer were supposed to be shot. These "hunters" would come in with deer that were just barely over the fawn stage: maybe 25 pounds. Male and females, but no antlers.

Cured me of my desire to hunt, for life.

I sympathize, doc, but the deer are like vermin by me in mid-NJ. I've had at least 8 close encounters with them this year alone (that's on the road, in front of my car), with one impact. They are a hazard, and their numbers continue to increase. We continue to create acres and acres of meadows, and then plant arborvitae, which is candy to them. There are more deer in my area now than in colonial days ('course, there are no more pumas around....)

Now, they've tried a bunch of tactics to reduce their numbers in Princeton (the next town over), including sterilization and "culling," using this gent from Utah or ND who comes in an sets up bait points for two weeks, then harvests over 2 or 3 nights. (I think they donate the meat to shelters.) He does take a large number during that time.

Unfortunately, none of the surrounding towns, mine included, will permit similar efforts, so the deer continue to thrive unchecked, undermining Princeton's efforts. The only culling in these areas occurs during hunting season. I have hunters entering the woods down at the end of my street throughout the season; they generally emerge in no time with kills.

Without these efforts, I think I would have Bambi and the crew in my living room, munching on a few Doritos and playing reindeer games ('tis the season ).

What do you do?

Oh, I know there are a lot of them. I have even seen them on the sides of the Interstates at night; I counted 14 in one 5 mile stretch last year on I-20. I was really lucky none of them bounded out in front of me.

But I just can't shoot Bambi.

A client in north central Kansas recently told me that last year they had so many deer that the District Attorney announced (publicly) that his office would not prosecute any deer poachers.....

On another note....last year while driving between Abilene, Tx. and Del Rio in the middle of the night, my partner and I counted 134 deer, nearly missing several. Strange thing was that we never saw any road killed deer..it finally dawned on me that the area has a large population of Mexicans fresh from across the border and, surely, very poor...I'd bet they pick up road kill daily.

No offense, Farq, but i'm willing to bet a shiny schilling that the deer were there before we moved in...

Hard to blame them, if you think about it.

'course I don't blame them, Rock, they're reacting to the conditions we've set up for them. It's a great living, if you can get it.

I blame the short sighted, misguided idiots in our area that won't allow for proper culling.

Mmmmm. If I lived around him I'd be driving a Hummer, for sure. Gotta have a vehicle that could at least bounce off!

When I was out in Salt Lake this year, I played a course in the mountains that supposedly had more than occasional signtings of those bad boys. Apparently they liked to hang out in the fairways and critique shots (plenty off smack could be thrown in my direction, I'll tell ya). Didn't see any that day tho. I do remember struggling with my driver, and in that thin air it went a long way....

Shot mid-low 80s, somewhere, I don't remember exactly. It was a good round for me at that time. The most memorable hole was a dogleg right par 4 with a forced, blind 200 yard carry over crap and a creek. Luckily I was playing with two locals, one of whom played the course all the time and gave me a target to aim at. I controlled that tee shot (a real bonus that day) and pured a 7 iron to the back of a well-protected green. Just skidded a mile long putt past the hole, and tapped in for par.

Sweet!

I played at the Highlands Links in Cape Breton NS this summer, and we had to wait 10 mins on hole 12 while bullwinkle "played through"
