Another reason to avoid Canada!

I was reading through one of my father in-law's outoors magazines last night and seen an interesting article.

Wolves in Northern Saskata...whatever...killed and ate a 22 year old kid. Pretty good story.

They actually used the term "north country". All I could think about was how much better the Charlize Theron movie would have been if they had someone getting eaten by wolves in it.

Anyway, you better be watching your back up there Rock!

Saskatchewan, dude. I live here, remember?

That guy was killed at a mine site. I work with the geological survey, so that story hit home with alot of people here. The geologists spend every summer up north.

Rumour has it that the guy suffered a heart attack and keeled over. Then the wolves sensed opportunity and nabbed him.

First wolf attack on a human in Canada in over 100 years tho...so I wouldn't be so worried.

He was probably already dead when they ate him. Wolves much prefer avoiding people.

The article said that the wolves actually followed the guy and preyed on him. The tracks in the snow suggested that the 22 y/o had stumbled to the ground twice while running from them before they actually got him down for good.

They did say that this was a unique situation because these wolves were more like junkyard dogs due to the fact that they fed off of the garbage dump from the camp. They had become accustomed to human inhabitance which made them more dangerous.

Ya, I think the "predatory" angle of that was more a rumour than anything, because of what you've actually said there, along with Doc.

Co's ended up shooting the wolves in question. Seems like a pretty extreme measure, but one that society deems as "correct". What a bunch of crap.

Points North is where all the guys fly out of in the spring for field work.

Wolves do not [normally] attack humans. Extenuating circumstances might include rabies ... but they do not usually do this!

I'd wait for all the details because this doesn't sound right.

Indians used to play with wolf pups - in their dens - without a problem. And I've been out there overnight, with wolves howling at the lower end of Shuman Lake [nobody'll know where that is! ] and never had a problem either.

Now, cougars are another story altogether! One was seen up here a couple of miles away, just yesterday. They're not to be trifled with!

That was the 2nd wolf attack in Saskatchewan last year.

Check out this story where a guy was attacked by a wolf in Jan, 2005. He wrestled it to the ground and held it there until a bus came by and stopped to help him.

Wolf Attack in Saskatchewan

And as far as cougars are concerned, over the past couple of years there have been a couple of sightings of cougars in Saskatoon along the river bank.

The bottom line, you gotta be tough to live in Saskatchewan.

Right Rock?

Wow; you guys are scaring me. I'm planning a Canadian vacation this summer. We're starting in Seattle and the Olympic Peninsula, then ferrying over to Victoria, BC, then driving to Jasper and Banff. I guess I'd better cancel my plans. I just can't take the risk of getting eaten or murdered, since these things are obviously commonplace in that frozen, tundra-infested wasteland!!

What a great trip!! Don't let that one fall by the wayside!

And up here in the "wasteland" things just happen to be a bit more exciting that's all.

The biggest worry in northern Ontario on an early Spring golf course would be Black Bears ... moreso than wolves and cougars.

Tough....or stupid!

It's sad that alot of these stories are picked up by the american press that then create this idea that Saskatchewan is just a barren wasteland where people get eaten by wolves. I think alot of people from down south would really enjoy it here. There's alot more to Saskatchewan than meets the eye, the American (and to some degree, Canadian) eye!

Banff and Jasper are great. Watch out for deer and elk. They are EVERYWHERE!!

There was a bear attack in Banff last year. But they do their best to curb potential of that from happening. Once you get there, you'll see that it's totally blown out of proportin, Duff.

That will be a great trip. When you get to Banff, ask for a "Pilsner". You'll get the greatest look ever.

I was kidding about the frozen wasteland bit. I've been to Canada a couple of times and it is truly a magnficent country (except for that Saskatchewan province!!)
