New Zealand....tips/hints?

The old lady and I are starting to put together a trip to New Zealand for next fall. Maybe 3 or 4 weeks. We're thinking of either renting a car and using hostels as a heavenly abode or renting a camper van and going that route. A few nights will also be spent in more luxurious accomodations, or maybe a combinations of everything above. Transportation options are vast, yet i'm unsure of what would be best.

Anyone ever been? It's always been #1 on my list for places to visit, yet I've really never looked into the logistics of it all until now. And being that it's basically the farthest place I could get away from my house on the planet, it seems a wee bit overwhelming.

Any suggestions or tips would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance,

R35

My bro-in-law hails from NZ, just outside Auckland. Like you it's on my list of places to visit before I die, and like you it's the other side of the world to visit. I have seen SO many pics and home movies, apparently it's just magnificent. Golf is suppose to be as "cheap as chips" as well. We plan to go when the boys are a bit older and take about 4 weeks.

If you have any specific questions re. Auckland, PM me and I'll get the low-down from the Kiwi.
