American Breakfasts

What do they consist of ?

I often go to a place in Belfast when I'm up visiting sister, shopping, etc., that does a "Yankie Fry" with "Yankie style eggs."

Now these particular eggs are the best *type* of egg I have ever tried, and that means something, particuarly when my dad makes a *mean* scrambled egg.

Anyhoo, I have no idea at all what way this egg is done. It is very close to being an ommelette except it is definately not an ommelette.

You also get a huge pancake, waffles, maple cured bacon, hash browns, sausages and a big bottle of maple syrup to douse over the lot of it. This I have grown to love after first sampling this marvelous breakfast.

My question is: Is this a typical American-style breakfast, yes ?

Has anyone got any idea about the eggs, no ? I guess I would have to ask one of the chefs...

Anyway, all the best,
Andy

When I was there, I had Fruit Loops every day... Lovely.... Then again, I don't think adults would have the same...

When I was in America I ate breakfast like a pig.
Huge piles of pancakes covered in maple cyrup
Giant piles of Bacon
Plates full of Scrambled egg
and two bowl's full of cereal.
Yet I didn't manage to get over 8 stone truelly worrying.

My usual weekday breakfast is a protein bar, and lots of coffee. On the weekends, if I'm playing golf, it's an Egg McMuffin (egg, canadian bacon and cheese on a english muffin) and lots of coffee.

I am a creature of habit and have the same thing for bfast 90% of the time:

1 Granola Bar
1 8 oz glass of Skim Milk
1 4 z glass of OJ
1 Protein shake (blended)
- Contents
8 oz OJ
5 Strawberries Frozen
3 Tbsp Strawberry Yogurt
1.5 scoops vanilla protein powder.

This is enough to keep me going until lunch. Although I am usually starved by 11:00am. I have had the breakfasts you mention and they are great (especially after a night of drinking)

The Best Breakfast - the way we do it in Texas.

1. Chop up a bunch of onions, start them sauteeing in a little butter.
2. Mix up about 4 eggs. Throw in a handful of grated cheddar cheese, & a couple of chopped jalapenos, mebbe some chopped tomatoes & a splash of milk, dump them into the frying pan with the onions.
3. Cook 'em up.
4. About 3 pieces of toast, dripping with butter (not margarine, moo-cow butter).
5. Put the eggs on a plate, bury them under a bunch of chili. Eat 'em up.
6. Call your cardiologist & make an appointment.

If it's standard just get me to work day, it's a bowl of cereal and a glass of milk along with a banana.

On lazier, indulgent mornings, I'll make 3 eggs over easy placed on top of whole wheat toast.

Yup Andy that is the 'traditional American breakfast'. OPTIONS abound.

1) Eggs:

FRIED (cooked in a simple skillet) The egg is carefully cracked and dumped into the skillet so that the yolk remains intact when being cooked.
A) Over Easy...means they are cooked on one side until the outer part turns white and then it is flipped very briefly, cooked and served. When the diner cuts into the yolk, it will run all over the plate. Often messy and sopped up with toast. See toast options below.
B) Over Medium. Same as Over Easy but cooked just a bit longer on the second side. The yolk will still run a bit when cut into by the diner.
C) Over Well. The yolk is thoroughly cooked and is solid when served.

b) Scrambled. The eggs are beaten in a bowl. Often a bit of cream or milk is added. Cooked in a skillet with a spatula with the cook almost constantly moving it about. Many items can be added per Mr. wirehair's post. I customarily add lots of onions, ham and cheddar cheese. Very similar to an omellette except that it is all 'scrambled' together. Breakfast buffets are very very common at hotels over here and scrambled eggs are omnipresent. And per wirehair, peppers of certain varieties (usually red) are often added to scrambled eggs for a bit of spice.

MEAT:

1) Bacon. Traditional or "Canadian Bacon". Yes in the states, we call it Canadian Bacon, which is leaner, has less fat and more pure bacon meat.

2) Sausage. Pattie or links. Pattie sausage is a round pattie about 6 cm in diameter. Links resemble little frankfurters.

BREAD:

1) Toast can be either White or Wheat bread put into a simple toaster. Served with butter or jelly/jam. Often used to sop up the egg yolk if you get your eggs over easy or medium.

2) English Muffin. Yes that is what we call them over here. Haven't a clue if you call them that or not.

Potatoes:

1) Hash browns are what you saw. Shredded potatoes fried in grease. Often come in a large pattie.

GRITS

This is something that is served in the American South. It baffles non-Southerners from the US and Canada. This is ground corn and it looks like a little white pile of glob sitting on the plate. Not served outside the Southern US.

Waffles and Pancakes as you have seen are very popular....you can make em a hundred ways with all sorts of fruit and the whatnot.

And There you have it...

My typical breakfast

Like any true Washingtonian consists of a pot of coffee, we have 2 Mr. Coffees in the kitchen because my wife also likes breakfast.

Good list Bravo.

In the meat section I would add a nice slice of country ham. about 3/8" thick with the circle of bone in, a bit on the salty side, pan fried. Should cover at least half the plate, maybe 2/3rds.
Also find homestyle fries -1/2" fried cubes rather than the shredded hashbrowns, a good choice.
Lets all meet at the Waffle House? Which exit?
