Well, actually two 45 lb. tortoises. Sssmokin's hand is in the pictures. These are his wife's pets and she gave him hell for taking pictures before the "daily cage cleaning" was done. Each one eats a huge bag of Romaine lettuce per day.

They are African spur thighed desert tortoises........Geochelone sulcata. And all I know about them is they eat a ton of plants on the one end, and poop out a ton of crap on the other end.

had the opportunity to chase a turtle last year while diving in GC. Very greaceful creatures and also surprisingly comfortable with humans.

Even snapping turtles, to a point, can be pretty docile. However, the snapping turtle, when it bites, it's going to be bad.

Snappers docile? I tried to pull a huge snapper off the road once (bigger then those tortoises) by pulling it's tail. Couldn't budge it, it kept pulling me along and it hissed like a croc and almost got me. Their shell has big cutouts and they can reach way back and bite. I put a small board near it and it sounded like a rifle going off when it bite that. It chopped a limb right in two. I'm sure it could take a finger off.

I have never heard of, or seen a snapping turtle before. Is that picture for real??
a few weeks back i had 4 baby snapping turtles. Their shells were small than a Loonie.
A snapper could probably take ur finger off before it's a year old.

Well, it depends on the snapper. I've got a friend who has one and he's pretty mellow, but you can tell it's gonna hurt if it happens.
I don't know, maybe the turtle found my friend's stash.

I was bit by a small one when I was a kid. My dad had to pry it off my finger with a knife. I didn't lose anything but it did hurt.
It wasn't a tortoise, it was a snapping turtle.
