Canada spreads culture to US.

Never let it be said that Canada doesn't make significant contributions to US culture. Celine Dion and now asshat, (asshat's a keeper, please take back Celine). Thanks Canada.

ASSHAT

The Origins and Spread to the United States

From what I can trace back from archived IRC chats, the term 'asshat' was first used in the large European country of Sweden as an alternative for the word ‘*******.’ From Sweden, by way of both train and ship, the word found it’s way to the shores of western France, where it was used by a software coder named Louis (LOO-ee) in a telephone conversation with his second cousin in Newfoundland. This great man was responsible for sending this fashionable European word to North America for all children to enjoy!
Grand Sweden
Once on the North American continent, there was no stopping it’s spread to the states. In a June 2000 memo to US-Canadian Customs agents, they were warned to not let this word slip across the border. At this point the word had such a Canadian backing that there was no way to stop it’s glorious spread. And so, ‘asshat’ was first used in the US by an Inuit man named Pukkeenegak who slipped across the border in his kayak. God bless the Inuit!

Huh.

Until Silver said it a couple weeks back, I had never heard that term used. Never.

Interesting tho...

It's new to me too but I like it. Who knows maybe I'll be starting something new in Texas.

You probably hadn't heard because you are in the middle of nowhere.

"Nowhere".

Is that new English? I've never heard that word before either.

Oh wait, I have to go tend to my cariboo and sled dogs.

You guy's are way behind the times.

I've known about asshat for something like 2 years.

I first saw it on a WW2online board. I wish I knew you guy's didn't know about it...I would have used it myself and dazzled you with my current slang.

I could tell right away that you were down with the inner city lingo, Sling.

Thing is, it changes so fast, it's incredible.

Can you attach .wav files here at ST? I have an outstanding wave file that really frames my point about the changing language and it would be great to post here.

The WW2 connection is apprapo, as it is derived from the German, assenhatten-- literally interpreted as "One whose head is cradled by butt-cheeks". Interesting trivia.

It's so gold.

It's a little old, it's been around for a while. But the Flash is just oustanding.

My favorite part is the guy giving the hand symbol in the lowrider Impala.

Some people are just geniuses.

Southern migration begins

I was with my oldest daughter for a few hours this weekend since she had talked me into running the Capitol 10,000 with her. It's a fun race with over 13,000 participants. We were slow but finished.

Anyway, since she lives in Austin and it's suppose to be a hip kinda place I asked her if she was familiar with asshat. She had never heard but liked it and so it begins. She plans to call all her friends asshats until the word spreads around the city.

Austin is huge for live music with groups coming to play from around the world so.....

You called your daughter an asshat?

Nice parenting....

Capitol 10,000? What's that? What does the 10,000 stand for?

At times I'd like to call both the girls asshats. If you end up having kids you'll see.

It's 10,000 meters or 6.2 miles. It's the biggest 10k in Texas and has been held for 28 years. Some come to race and others to just have fun, if running 6 miles can be considered fun.

Gotcha.

I figured it was metres, but knowing the US, you guys still haven't figured it out yet.....miles, what's a mile?

1000 metres in a kilometre. 100 centimetres in a meter.

How hard is that?

How many feet in a mile?
