I have been saying this for a while now, mandatory insurance on all dogs. You'd need insurance to have a license to own one. Golden Retriever would be like insuring a Hyundai. Pitbull would be like a 17yr. old with that Audi. Insurance would obviously be less with more verification of responsibility and safe environment.

So is that guy going to sue or what? I'd own that house quick if that dog attacked me.

I dont think he needs to worry about walking the streets anymore, he already knows he can take down a vicious dog comin at him if need be.

Actually, my best man, about 10 years ago, got into the mix with a pit bull that attacked his dog on a walk.

Now I am talking about a 6 foot 4 inch 250lb. black man with extremely strong hands and fingers; he broke one of my fingers in a night game of basketball that required major surgery (It was an accident; I made him my best man a couple of years later)... I digress...

I wasn't there, but according to him the pit bull locked onto his little dog, and wouldn't let go. He said he punched the pit bull 3 times in the left eye as hard as he could, and the dog unlocked. The dog then started yelping and running away...

Trust me, that is a true story, but he didn't kill it like the man above; that old man has " Old Man Strength."

I used to own a medical transport company here in San Francisco, and in a moment when I was really pissed off, I stared down a really mean ass pitbull in a hallway that was preventing me from doing my job, and I was in a really bad mood, and about as strong as I will ever be in this lifetime, back then...

Trust me, at that time, I was an animal too, and we locked eyes, and he let me pass him; I walked right by him, and he dropped his eyes, after he witnessed my breaking into his house... I think the dog saw that I would kill him, and I was going to do exactly that, with my bare hands, if I had to; that pit saw it in my eyes, I am sure...

When it comes down to it, I know I can kill pretty much any dog that comes after me, but I am a dog lover; I hope I never have to. My first dog saved my brother's life when he was only 2 years old, and I was 4 years old...

You would have to have been raised around big German Shepherds, Rotts, etc., as a child to know how to hit them in the right spot. I --- oh forget it...

Don't get me started you bastards...

Pit bulls are so unpredictable. A friend's daughter was walking down a street and a whole bunch of them were running in a pack in the neighborhood and attacked her. Almost killed her. Tore her all up. What's wrong with these owners. They should be shot along with their dogs.

Your world is a wonderful place as you continuously remind us. Good show!

Actually the PitBull thing is big over here in Ireland too. They are generally unlicienced and lots of them are used in Dog Fighting. Locally several children have been killed or maimed recently and there are amnesties being run to hand these dogs in to be destroyed.

So it is a big issue all over the world. Pit Bulls seems to be given the worst press of all. I am sure this is a much to do with environmental factors as genetics, but those dogs sure are scary. I hope my family never encounters one.

Ezra, you make me sad.

You are SUCH a smart person,

I love the idea of insurance on dogs, never heard of it, but really a great idea.

Oh yeah, on that guy, that's awesome that he did it, but a shame he had to.

Our local animal shelter is filled with Pitt Bulls that no one wants or claims. They are a seriously scary breed.

In fact, most insuracne companies won't sell homeowner's insurance if they know the owner's have one. There are a few other breeds they don't like Pit Bulls top the list.

many cities are trying to pass ordinances making them illegal in city limits. I almost shot one about 6 months ago when my daughter and I were playing outside, he just ran up on us and I threw my daughter in the house and grabbed my gun popped off a few rounds at the grass and he took off. Its my neighbors dog and they have about 7 of them and I always catch them in the other neighbors trash, I usually just pepper spray them but this time one of them went to far. All of the dogs were confiscated from my neighbor and the neighbor tried to claim some lame firearm thing on me but I am licensed to carry and it was on my own property.

Thanks Irish.

But please remember that pit bulls really are not much more dangerous than other dogs... Remember when German Shepherds were the source of the most attacks in the U.S. (I know you are U.K., but play along)?

Then Rottweillers were the meanest for years...

Now it is pit bulls.

I love dogs with all my heart, and I have never harmed one, although quite capable of doing so...

I really think my purebred German Shepherd helped me in my childhood through my parent's divorce... I was only 10 years old, but my dog stuck by me through my parent's divorce, at that time. I used to go down and hold onto her and cry my eyes out about how sad I was, and she was there to listen...

I actually have memories of that German Shep sleeping on my bed when I was only 4 years old... I felt the love...

Oh you bastards are getting me started...

Okay crap it is late, but I will tell you this story... My mom tells me the story every now and then, because I was only 4, and my baby sister was almost 1.5 years old at the time...

Our female German Shepherd at that time had just had 10 puppies, and they were in the house in the kitchen/dining room area; big house, newborn German Shephard puppies...

My baby sister, about 1.5 years old walks/crawls into the area while momma dog is feeding her young... My sister proceeds to pick up one of the puppies and hold it by its hind leg.

My mom tells the story something like this: "So then Duchess comes into my bedroom whining to me. She comes up and licks my hand and whines. I ask what's wrong...

Our new doggie momma moves into the hallway, and continues whining. I follow her, and when I reach the kitchen/dining room area, my baby daughter (crawled out of the baby bed) is holding one of her puppies by the hind leg..."

I am not a woman, but my mom says it like she is honest... She says: "It was like two mothers communicating a problem with their children."

My mom then grabbed her baby girl, and fixed the situation. Duchess is the same dog that saved my 2.5 year old brother's life 6 months earlier...

Basically, as adults when we talk about it, we can't figure out why she didn't just kill the baby to save her puppy, but she new who the alfa male/woman was, I guess... Same thing with parenting, etc...

How can you not love dogs?

spankdoggie

P.S. rambling, might not make much sense..., but it might...

German Shepherds are great dogs. Not vicous unless trained to be. I like most dogs but don't have them because of the responsibility involved. They are too much like people with their personalities and quirks and I get too attached. Cats are perfect. Want to go on a vacation for a week? Put fresh sand in the cat box, tons of water and food out and leave. You don't get attached either so when they croak you don't care. Dogs are like family.

Great posts spanky....that old man was fast thinking and el survival instincts kicked in quickly for him. Glad the dog had a collar.

Weirdly, I had a vet tell me one time that if a dog gets his mouth around one of your hands, rather than trying to wrench it out (which can be practically impossible if it is a medium to large dog), you should actually attempt to shove your thumb down the dogs throat and grasp the jawline and squeeze.

At the same time, use your other hand to grab the dog by the scruff of its neck behind the ears so you can get some modicum of control of its head. Then, try to force the dog onto its back and sit on it if possible. This will minimize the clawing

Then, continue to force your thumb down its throat (as well as sitting on its chest if possible) therefore unless the dog can get enough air through its nose - you will suffocate it to death.

You're gonna need some stiches on that hand in the throat but you are getting some degree of control (if not killing it) while you are very critically keeping the dog away from your neck. Instinctively, they know where you neck is and will rip out your arteries causing rapid death.

Kinda weird but I have remembered this for years. What to do if you get into a death match with a dog...

LOL, gotta love those cats. I love it when they bite you for no reason, makes you want to find out if they really do land on their feet all the time. Oh and they dont!

Up here you cant have a pit bull inside of the city limits unless it is to see a vet. They must be muzzled at all times when outdoors in our province as well. I would prefer to see them banned outright.
