Tornadoes in Florida

I hope none of our Florida shot talkers were injured in this. Man, what a state. Hurricanes AND tornadoes. No way would I live there, even if it meant golf year round. We deal with tornadoes, mostly in the late spring but to have to deal with both would have me packing.

Let's hear from you guys on this...

Too many trailer parks. Everyone knows that tornadoes are caused by mobile homes.

My wifes entire family lives where it hit in Deland, Deltona, Lake Mac, and other parts of Volusia and Lake County. They are all fine except for some of their friends since they cant find them and I think her sisters house has flooded in Deltona but that is to be expected since she lives on a lake.

Even though I am never in the news I always have some relatives involved.

Remember when those two girls that were kidnapped at gun point in California and then were involved in a gun fight with the police? Well one of them was my niece.

I was in a tornado in 1992. Pretty scary shit. It missed the hall we were in, but hammered some mini vans and cars and pulled alot of wheat right out of the ground.

Freight train sound? You bet....

All good down here on the east coast. Serious storming going on, but I snuck in a full 18 on a very soggy course. Nice when it is so empty

All those that were hit hard though are in our prayers for sure.

And don't kid yourself WBL, year round golf is great! A hurricane every once and a while just keeps you honest. We aren't known for tornados...this was a strange occurance.

Two summers ago I was coming home after golfing in the morning with sssmokin up in central Wisconsin. I noticed a black wall of clouds ahead of me with three "points" coming down so figured I'd better watch it close. I got closer and was coming up to a four-way stop and it looked like there was a huge grass fire ahead (forgetting about the points above). Clouds swirling, some black, some wispy. I expected a big delay from fire trucks. But there was no fire. I had just driven under a "forming" tornado. Duh. So I take off after stopping and there is this 300 yard diameter "circle" of clouds, dust and whatever swirling around my car (in the middle). I'm like in the middle of a tornado and it's moving in the same direction I am. I had to drive through the "wall" to get free and my wife's little Honda Civic felt like it was going to tip over when I blasted through the outside of that swirling mass. I'm beyond thinking, just reacting and speed limits be damned. After I "broke free", I looked behind me and sure enough, there was a tornado funnel, not 50 yards away. I must have just got "out" before it touched down. Talk about the old heart pounding. I've still kept the official police report on a confirmed tornado in the little village of Poy Sippi, Wisconsin. The 4-way stop IS Poy Sippi....

If I would have had a movie camera (and someone to run it) in the car I could have had some pictures or movies to sell to National Geographic. Never seen anything like this in their magazine yet.

I live about 40 minutes from where the tornado's hit. It was really bad. We got hit with the same storm but were lucky enough not to get the tornado's where I live. The storm itself was nasty. It woke me up about 5:00am and when I looked out the window it looked like a hurricane coming through.

My wifes friend from high school died in that tornado, we looked at the google hybrid map at the location of the deaths and they were about 1/2 mile from where my in-laws live. My wife bought them a weather alarm radio device that automatically turns on during a weather emergency. We are always trying to get my in-laws to move because my wife said that when she was growing up that they would get tornados in their area all the time.

Wow WBL....great story and great writing with good descriptions...

We certainly get our share here and the only one I ever saw personally was in 1975 when I was in college in Tuscaloosa. We had three down in that county at one time that day. It was wild.

Most of our county (Jefferson) is pretty hilly, therefore they don't tend to touch down and stay down, but kind of skip from peak to peak, unless on the very rare occasion that it gets down in a valley. Then its really brutal.

One went over our club and about 2 minutes later - over my house 7 years ago.

We lost 215 trees on the course and had to rerout a hole because key trees in the crook of a dogleg were all knocked down.

It then proceeded to take the roof off the county water purification plant before passing over my house.

The winds are so much higher in a tornado than a hurricane. We've had some genuine F5's here with winds of 250 MPH/400 KPH.

That will obliterate anything.

I'd still take living here over living in the frozen tundra of the northland any day though...
