Thread: New Guy from Lawrence, Kansas

  1. New Guy from Lawrence, Kansas

    Good evening.

I made the decision a few months ago to return to the game after ten years away. My departure from the game was due to family commitments and business, but now my kids are old enough to start learning, and my wife is a tenured professor, so she can start getting out as well.

With my return, I decided to start over with a good set of clubs, but withing a budget. A friend of mine owns the local Gold USA franchise and fixed me up with Callaway Hyper-X D,3,3H, and fitted me for Ping G-5's. I held on to my old TaylorMade putter and Calloway 60 degree wedge.

I plan on taking some lessons with a local pro before I start spending too much time on the course. I need to just get back to hitting the ball square and knowing which club for which situation.

I read a few threads on this forum before I chose my clubs and I have no regrets. I know I'll be shooting in the 90's soon, and if I keep paying attention to my body mechanics, the 80's are within reach. Just getting out on the range has helped me a great deal just hitting the ball straight.

I look forward to participating in the forum.

Don't worry about the Memphis Tiger Fan, we outnumber him and he's harmless.

Actually I'm starting to guess we may even outnumber those from around Wisconsin. It's the guy Limpalong you need to worry about. Before you know it he'll be talking about how he was around when they originally coined the term "Jayhawk" (not meaning the mascot). While we have accepted the fact that he has really been around that long, it is because he spent most of that time in Manhattan, KS that his scinility should be the least of your concerns with him. Although I think he was probably last seen with his musket in hand on the outskirts of Stagg Hill or Colbert Hills Golf Course trying to fend off Quintrells Raiders and keep them from advancing west of Lawrence

Welcome, Grim. (You don't know how difficult is was to say "Welcome" to a guy from Lawrence!!! I live in Manhattan!)

Are you playing Eagle Bend or Alvamar? I really enjoy Eagle Bend. Have played it quite a few times. It's an easy course to walk, except between 1 and 2... between 10 and 11... and that #17 par 3. Have a son-in-law in DeSoto and we get over to Eagle Bend a couple times a year.

Keep plugging away. You'll get the hang of the game back before you know it. Again, welcome to ShotTalk!!
Blessed to have a bag full of trustworthy friends who have provided this old man with hundreds of hours enjoying the great game of golf.

I've played Eagle Bend a few times. Wife and I (she's faculty @ KU) just joined Lawrence Country Club, but for now it's a social membership until I get my game around. The social membership includes unlimited access to an Executive 9, so I'll play there and get some lessons until I'm breaking 90 with regularity. My right knee seems to be holding up do far.

It's my left knee that's worn out... bone on bone. So... since you're just taking up the game again and only have purchased a social membership... could I trade left knees with you? You'll have two excuses for your game and I'll have none!!!
Played LCC one time many years ago. It was in a scramble and it was pouring rain. One of the least enjoyable rounds I can remember. If you upgrade to a full golfing membership, remember your "friends" here at ShotTalk!
Does Mangino belong to LCC or Alvamar? I would think if he's on the course, there wouldn't be room for anyone else. Do they even make a golf cart large enough for him?
Used to have a good friend who belonged to the private side of Alvamar. Had the opportunity to play that about once a month for a couple years. GREAT course!! Difficult!!! That was back when Roy Williams was still at KU and we would run into him playing there quite often.
You have a lot of excellent venues around Lawrence to get your game back in order. Best of luck!!!!!!!!

    Welcome, Grim.

    I just can't resist--it shouldn't take too long to break 90 on a par 27. Even for a newbie.

Yeah, that one slipped by me, and I'm normally pretty good at the math. I'll use the Orchards to get my game around so when I play at Eagle Bend/Alvamar/LCC I don't look like a complete noob. I'm going to go in and talk to the pro at LCC this next week about lessons for myself, She Who Must Be Obeyed, and their junior golf program.

Hey Grim welcome to the forum from another Kansan.

I get over to Lawrence every now and again and usually play Alvamar a few times every year. I played in a scramble there last fall for work and we had a blast.

Good luck with both your game and your knee.
