Thread: New guy in Atlanta

  1. New guy in Atlanta

I stumbled across this board yesterday and I ended up spending a couple of hours just reading posts. It looks like a great site and I look forward to visiting frequently. I'm just now getting back in to golf after taking about a year off. Currently I'm shooting 92-95, but I should get back in to the 80's before too long. I'm very rusty right now, so obviously I have plenty of room for improvement and I've seen some really useful info on here coming from knowledgeable posters.

I live in Atlanta but South Carolina will always be "home". Hope everyone is having a good Easter.

Welcome!!! Yes, the Carolinas are nice! Saw some beautiful country when we drove to Fort Jackson, SC a few years ago. Son called from NC, today, (he's stationed at Fort Bragg) and it was 65 and sunny.

The Southeast has had some difficult Spring weather this past few weeks though. Didn't Atlanta have some tornados close just a night or two ago??

Don't believe all you read on this forum. If the posters are under 35... they're just guessin'!! If they are old farts like a few of us... we know everything!!!!

Blessed to have a bag full of trustworthy friends who have provided this old man with hundreds of hours enjoying the great game of golf.

Thanks for the warm welcome, everyone!

Limpalong- yeah we've had some crazy weather here lately. This area has had severe T-Storms, tornadoes, downpours, 75+ degree temps, and sleet/snow all within the last 2 weeks. Last night some bad storms passed through and knocked over trees and powerlines. I finally got the opportunity to play at Sugarloaf last Tuesday, and it was sleeting and snowing with about 25 mph winds. If it had been almost any other course, I would have packed it up and headed to the house.

I grew up about 30 miles from Ft. Jackson, and went to college there in Columbia (USC). Please give your son a big thank you for his service. I went to the Air Force after college and I really miss the people and comradere.

Since I just started back after taking about a year or so off, I've been playing at Fox Creek and Legacy, mostly. They're exec courses, but they've been good for me since it's mostly par 3's with an occasional par 4 or 5 mixed in. I can never get enough short iron work! They're close to where I work, so me and guys from work play there once a week after work. I've also played a few courses south of Atlanta, but that was before I stopped playing and I can't remember the names of the courses(I didn't live in Atlanta at the time). Last week I got to play at Sugarloaf and Reynolds Plantation out at Lake Oconee. I loved Reynolds....the course we played at Reynolds was The Oconee. Sugarloaf was awesome too, but the weather was so bad, I don't think I got the full experience. Hopefull I'll get a chance to get back out there soon.

Do you have any suggestions for courses in the area?

    hey adam!

if your playing reynolds plantation courses your playing way out of my budget . Providence, Hard Labor, Chimneys, and bear creek are about as close to atl as i get.

    Welcome to ST.

I'm in Atlanta as well. I live in downtown, but play all over.

Been wanting to try Fox Creek and Legacy, since they are on the same stretch of road, but it always looks busier than I'd care to play at.

I normally play out towards Newnan/Carrollton/Douglasville area. Nice courses, less crowds, and better prices.

Intown, I play at the St. Mtn courses, or Smoke Rise CC.

BTW, Reynolds is nice. I play across the lake at Cuscowilla sometimes.

I live downtown also, but I hope to move soon...my wife and I are wanting to get back to the burbs.

Fox Creek and Legacy are usually pretty crowded, but since it's so close to where I work, it's really easy to get out there and squeeze in as many holes as we can before dark. A lot of other people have the same idea, b/c it's usually pretty slow. But it's better than not playing at all I guess. I'm going to look up some of those courses in the Douglasville/Newman area, I love playing new courses.
