  1. Carolina vs. Duke Baskeball: BLOOD BATH

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (AP) -Tyler Hansbrough had 26 points and 17 rebounds before suffering an ugly injury in the closing seconds of No. 8 North Carolina's 86-72 victory over 14th-ranked Duke on Sunday, clinching the top seed in the Atlantic Coast Conference tournament.
Senior Reyshawn Terry added 15 points in his final home game for the Tar Heels (25-6, 11-5), who swept the regular-season series with the Blue Devils for the first time in 11 years, avoided their first three-game slide under Roy Williams and gave the homespun coach his 100th victory at his alma mater.
    *
But perhaps the lasting image of the latest renewal of college basketball's most intense rivalry will be Hansbrough's bloodied face. He leaped for a layup with 14.5 seconds left, but after the ball left his hand he was struck in the face by Gerald Henderson's right elbow.
    *
Hansbrough crumpled to the ground, his nose bleeding profusely onto the floor and down his face, and he was restrained from the Duke players as he was being escorted to the locker room. The officials reviewed the play and ejected Henderson, then said he would be suspended for one game.

ONLY thing I want to ask (if you saw the game) why does Duke have to play dirty when they are lacking talent. Just plain dirty, dirty, dirty. Another reason to hate DOOKY.

  2. Well, obviously I'm a Badger fan but I lived in NC during the Jordan days and watched every game. When I don't pull for Wisconsin I'm pulling for my "second" team the Tarheels.... (They look pretty good this year).. And I agree on Duke. They always were that way. Doesn't matter. They won't last long in the NCAA....

When I first saw this, it looked pretty flagrant. After looking at it closer, and then watching it in slow mo frame by frame, I question if his intent was even to commit a hard foul. It looked like Henderson went up as though to block or stop him from scoring. The ball was stripped backwards after he was in the air and his hand and arm followed the ball, unfortunately the guys nose was in the way. When the play was done Henderson was facing the ball with both hands extended towards the ball. Not sure I could say I would have done any different when instinct is to follow the ball.

I do think Mike Krzyzewski should have kept his mouth shut and showed very little class. He called a timeout with 50 seconds left, yet has the stones to make it look like the thing happened because Williams left in the starters just after the time out. If he really thought that, maybe he should let the game go and not call a timeout when you are down 13 with less than a minute to go. Expecting Williams just to pull his players off when play is going on.

I think if Krzyzewski wouldn't have made the comment and the announcers would take the time to really look at the play, it may have looked alot less flagrant.

Although I'm an NCSU man, I do not hate either UNC or Duke. That being said, I agree with Pa Jay in that it didn't look flagrant to me...just a really, really bad accident. I think the ejection from the game is fine (no time/no chance to win, anyway), but I don't agree with the extra game.

I also do not like/never will like Hansbrough...he's an elitist, whiny baby with a bad attitude IMHO. But, I do hate that he got hurt that way. Not what B-ball is supposed to be about, regardless of who it happens to.

UNC is looking good for the tourney. I think Duke can still pull together a good tourney if they just work on it.

I didn't have a problem with the ejection either. Actually in the situation it kept the game under control. The automatic 1 game suspension is something that IMO should be reviewed later. Sadly the news said the ACC announced they will not review plays in a situation such as this, and what the official on the court says goes. Actually, I was surprised this was something for the ACC and not the NCAA???

Not that I am saying the suspension should be overturned, it could go either way. I would probably overturn it, but that is me, and I personally like UNC more than I will ever like Duke. They just have a really long history with Kansas. I am just not sure I want to try and decide what the players intent was, just to many considerations. I just think the ACC (or NCAA) should at least take into consideration after the fact when they have time to review the play. Do they really want to put the officials in a position where they have to take 5-10 minutes on the court to make sure they see every angle well enough to make the right decision that will not possibly impact a players career or a teams possible season. I think they should take the burden off the officials to allow them to be more concerned with reffing the game and not considering a teams destiny. I think the officials made a reasonably good decision base on the time and resources they had available, but it sounds like the ACC (or NCAA) want to make them the responsible party and wash their hands of any controversial decision. When they are likely just trying to back their officials. What would happen if the officials came out and said after further review they did not feel it was really that flagrant?

Well, it all depends on who it happens to. If NC State was on a tear and swept Dook, had there starters in, and winning by 12 with 17 seconds left, and a Dookie hits your star in the nose...it would be fine?

    Yeah right!

I stand by what I said above, regardless of what teams are involved. It didn't look flagrant to me.

Sorry if you are unable to understand that, or if my response to your post upset you. I am an NCSU alumnus/fan, but I'm not an NCSU fanatic. I try to be realistic about these things...there are too many people who will take something like this way too personally just because of what jersey the other team is wearing.

Question for you: if Hansbrough had nailed Henderson in the exact same manner (UNC still winning), what would your opinion have been? Would you have posted at all? Would you have called Hansbrough dirty? Or, would you have defended Hansbrough? Answer those questions honestly and then jump on me for my response, if you still can.

None of this is meant to attack you, simply responding to your post. Hope you're able to take it that way.

I would call it like I see it. It would be a flagrant, idiotic, malicious, foul. I don't care if it was East Carolina, Pittsburgh, FAMU, NC A&T, or BYU. If you showed that film to anyone not affiliated with the school or with basketball, the call would be the same.

I don't think Henderson is DIRTY. I think he was upset and made a dumb move. Yes, he was mad and yes he went for the hard foul. No he didn't intend to knock the stuffing out of Hansbroughs face, but he did intend to foul him hard. So his intent was to hit hard, but he messed up.

It's like going to rob a store. You don't intend to kill someone. My intent is robbing the store, but what happens when things go wrong. You can't take it back. It's already happened. So, it goes with Henderson...not trying to kill Hansbrough...it just happened to end that way.

One thing's for sure...that foul will make the next UNC/Duke meeting a little more intense on the court AND in the stands.
