Here's an eye opener:

There will be more Canadians tuned in to the late NFL game than the Grey Cup. Organizers had to set the time at 6pm EST to sandwich it between the 4pm and 8pm NFL starts.

When the game is between the two provinces that have the smallest populations, this makes total sense.

The fact that NFL in Buffalo is moving to Toronto is a prime example of that.

Advertising is the NFL's hugest dollar maker. It's a money pit. The CFL is a homegrown game, and completely disenchanted from CIAU, unlike the NFL with the NCAA.

Its no surprise that the NFL games will get a far bigger draw. Its better football, played by better players plain and simple. Most CFL supporters will say the US game is boring, where I find the exact opposite to be true. The CFL bores me to tears, last team with the ball wins. The Grey cup is the only game I watch all year and even then I hardly ever watch the whole thing.

The only thing that keeps the CFL afloat is it's connection to Canada - you must have a ratio of Canadian born players playing on each team. However, a very small contingent of these are actually Canadian SCHOOLED players, as the vast majority of them play in the States. For good reason. I mean, if you play well enough, you make the NFL, right? And our salaries for football are outstanding up here...

If the CFL had a program set up to directly compete with the NFL for players, the talent pool in each league would be comparable. However, this isn't a possibility. Peyton Manning isn't going to play for Edmonton for $450,000 a year, plus the payment on his house while in Edmonton. It just doesn't happen. We can't compete.

Which leads me to what I was getting at. You can't rightly compare the CFL and NFL directly. They are two completely different games. One league thrives on advertising and television rights, the other on locally owned and operated teams. Players don't compare and the money doesn't compare.

Which is why I have no doubt that the NFL pulls in a good crowd from down east. Especially when their teams are crap and they aren't in the playoffs (Hamilton, Montreal after losing, BC after losing..... Toronto all year, etc....)
