Laraque got 5 minutes and a game misconduct.

Downie was laughing after it and he fought in the 3rd period, so you knew the guy was alright. It wasn't like Downie's hit, where it put McAmmond out of the sport for a while.

Downie's not a hockey player, and he won't last long in the show if he continues with his antics.

Hmmmmm lets see, Downie is a tough skilled player. He is going to be a force someday when he gets control of his head. i'd say its this was coming for him but the act shouldnt go unpunished. I (and all of philly) like him even more because he had the balls to come out and fight the last period.

Laraque is a big, dumb oaf who is in the nhl to protect precious sidney. Much less of hockey player than downie.

This year
Downie
GP-13 Points-8

Laraque
GP-41 points-10

They probably won't announce anything until after the All Star Break, they don't want to have anything negative in the press during the weekend.

Downie dove in that hit. He went down easier than a rag doll.

Right call.

But Laraque should get a game or two for the check from behind, as tmag said, probly waiting til after the allstar break.

Laraque does out weigh him by about 80 pounds and has him by six or seven inches.

Contrary to what some think Downie is actually one heck of a skilled player. He was outstanding in junior and if he could get his head a little clearer could excel in the NHL as well. Laraque on the other hand is a typical meat head who has no business playing professional hockey.

I agree Laraque's wasn't the cleanest, but the man has respect for his game and in his 10-11 seasons I haven't seen him do anything as bad as Downie's, what, 13 games?

Downie threw the dirtiest hit I've ever seen on Dean McAmmond, in pre-season play, and threw a cheapshot at Jason Blake of all people. It's things like that, that show he has zero respect for the game. He's not the enforcer that Avery, Brashear or Laraque is, so in my opinion he should quit trying to be, and start worrying about his own game. He and Avery are the same size, but Avery can put up the numbers when needed.

Must not watch a lot of hockey if Downie's hit was the dirtiest you have ever seen. Off the top of my head, there is the Bertuzzi attack on Moore, the Hunter hit on Turgeon after he had scored a goal in a playoff game, Chelios on Brian Propp in a playoff game. Not defending his leaping shoulder on McAmmond, but there have been far worse.

Yeah, should've worded it better. It's right up there with those hits. The fact that it was pre-season makes it worse.

Gary Suter crosscheck to the face of Paul Karya, or his hit from behind on Wayne Gretzky.
Domi cheap shot elbow on (cant remember who) in the playoffs 2 years ago.

The list in plenty long. IMO the Downie hit isnt in the top 100 when it comes to dirty.

Bertuzzi hit, i believe it was marty mcsorly that two handed brashear over the side of the head.

the two dirtyest plays ive seen, also in the top ten was Moore on Naslund, which brought the Bert hit.

I don't watch Hockey, but I YouTube'd all the hits you guys are talked about. The ones with Suter didn't return anything... But of the ones I did see, the Downie/McAmmond hit is definitely the most eye-popping. Even if he didn't injure the guy as badly as Bertuzzi's hit did, it just looks so nuts.

Moore on Naslund?

That was a clean open ice hit, even Naslund said so.

As a Capitals fan, I still Don't know why I have such interest in the Capitals~Penguins matchups. Brashear and Laraque pretty much treat each other like it is "The Cold War" and I am forced to watch Ovechkin and Crosby, or Semin and Malkin Duke it out.

I would probably agree having seen the game, and as much as I was a fan of Hunter, the Hunter hit on Turgeon was one of the cheapest I remember simply because of the situation at hand. Mcsorley~Brashear would be a close second.
