The 'we' kinda fan

Gonna vent a little here, so bear with me. I get so ticked at all these fans who when they talk about their frickin team use 'we'. Like we played a good game tonight, or we got a great new player etc.. Unless you are an ACTUAL member of the stupid team, it is not 'we', it is whoever the f'in team is. You did not score any points, you did not help coach the stupid team, you could not even be the water boy for your stupid said team. Man, that just burns me up. OK, feel much better now. Some people are just stupid.

Re: The 'we' kinda fan

However, if they were at the game, they DID just help pay the salary of those players and/or coach....therefore they technically ARE part owners, therefore are able to say WE...

I guess i never thought about it but...it doesnt bother me...sorry dude.

I've been a fan of Manchester United for longer than the kid that scored for them this week and I'm only 19. When I say we I refer to me, the rest of the fans and the people on the pitch.

Then stay outta the "NHL" thread as I'm a souterner who loves my Canes and I just used "we" in a post!

I do understand what you're saying, though. I tend to agree with Adam...if you're a fan that puts money into tickets, goes to the games to cheer them on, I can see where using "we" would become 2nd nature.

btw, you're as close to the RBC Center as I am (I think)...why AREN'T you a Canes fan?

Re: The 'we' kinda fan

It annoys me when people talk about their fav team and use the word, "we". Its not as if they are a member of the team or anything.
I work with a few guys who say, "we" when talking about their fav team and a few times I have called them out on it. They always use the excuse that because they are a fan of the team, they are part of the team and can use the term, "we".
I think thats a bunch of BS, but whatever...

I am only about 40 miles from the RBC. I go to a lot of the State games there. Just never got into hockey. As to being a fan putting money into tickets, do you consider yourself a part of Exxon Mobile because you buy their gas? Same principle applies to sports. Fans are CONSUMERS, not owners. They get no financial beenfit from a teams success. Thus, they are not really a part of the team, other than being a fan.
Adam, How is Man U looking this year? I use to keep up with all the European leagues on a regular basis, have not keep up with them much lately

Re: The 'we' kinda fan

Bryguy is right - in a clinical, detached, emotionally bankrupt kind of way...

It's a pet peeve. He sees fans as consumers - nothing more. To me, being able to say "we" is what being a sports fan is all about. We identify with a team, we live vicariously through our athletic heroes, and we feel partially responsible for their victories (the 6th man) Of course, we don't take credit for their losses...

To me, it's the same phenomenon with movies - you either identify with a character and immerse yourself in their world, or you sit wondering why you just spent $8.00 to watch actors walk around movie sets.

For the record, I'm happy to see fans support their team - right up to the point where they begin to denigrate the opposing fans. My friend and I traveled to Boston once to see a 1998 World Cup Qualifier, along with a Tampa Bay Munity - New England Revolution match. During the MLS game, we sat in the stands in our Mutiny Jerseys, and cheered for "our" team. There were a couple of idiots behind us who wanted to beat us up because we dared come into "their" stadium and cheer against "their" team. That kind of fanaticism has no place in sports (and is a symptom of the passive-aggressive disorder that affects so many sports fanatics.

Feeling that you're part of a team, saying "my" team- I don't really see the harm.

But again, it's Bryguy's pet peeve, and lord knows I've got my own.

You should go to a few games, bry. I wasn't into it at all when they won the 2006 Stanley Cup and didn't really care to be. The next season I got a chance to go to a game and had so much fun I went back. Now, I go every chance I get and watch every game possible.

Let me ask you this: if you went to college (not a cut, simply don't know), did you ever say "we" in regard to your school teams? You're a student there, shouldn't you say "we"?

Also, if you ask any pro team athelete/coach (or listen to postgame interviews), they will tell you that there are times the fans keep the team in the game, or turn the game around, by the adrenaline rush the players get from the level of support (yelling, cheering) that the fans give. If a pro athelete thinks this way, and if the participation of the fans actually makes a difference to the players, then aren't "we" an extended part of the team?

btw, I know you were venting, but good topic, bry!

Re: The 'we' kinda fan

Luckily, I went to college at one of the less well known UNC schools, UNC-Wilmington, so I do not generally have an issue with band wagon fans of the Seahawks. I guess it rubs me so wrong because while I was there, I played on the soccer team. I know the hard work we put in and the crap we had to go through to be on that team, so it kinda gets under my skin when just because some one pays money for a ticket and jersey they feel like they are a 'part' of the team. They are a FAN, and I have no problem with that, but you have not made the sacrifices that the atthletes on the field have, and to ME, have not EARNED the 'right' to consider yourself part of the team. Do not get me wrong, I am a huge sports fan, Love NC State sports, as well as UNCW BBall and baseball. I am also a huge Dallas Cowboy's fan, but I never use 'we' when I talk about any of them.

MC, trust me, I have been to my fair share of hockey games. Best friends in HS were yankees from NY/Conn, and I went to a bunch NY Rangers, islanders and Hartford Whalers games. It just does not interest me.

Glad to hear you've given hockey a chance, and pretty cool to hear you went to some Whalers games! Tell you what, I'll keep hockey and you can keep baseball...it ranks lower for me than hockey probably does for you!

And thanks for the answer, I can certainly respect that!

I would rather watch ANY college sport than pro, except football(both American and what the rest of the world calls football) Pro basketball just sucks to me, and pro baseball players just act like they do not care. I love the college game cause most of those kids play because they love the sport, not the money. I really do not have as big an issue with Alum's of schools using 'we', but the person who would have hard time getting on as a janitor are the ones that just rub me wrong. They are also generally the most asinine fans there are.
