Any Runners here?

One of the guys I play hockey with asked me to run a leg in the marathon relay this past weekend. I loved it... so much so I think I am going to start training for a full marathon soon.

Anyone else out there getting ready for a marathon run this summer/fall? Would love some more motivation.

Re: Any Runners here?

My dad is an avid runner, its hard on his body now, but he still does it. Even had a scholarship in college for it.

Me? Not so much.

Re: Any Runners here?

Before the foot surgery and the arthritic knee. But my ideal distance was 10k. I used to run about one a week. Tried twice to train for a marathon, and ended up in cast each time.

Good luck! Don't let me discourage you.

Re: Any Runners here?

Running is very hard on the joints. Take up long-distance cycling. You can do 26.2 miles in an hour and a half

Running is so... primitive. Get a bike!

Re: Any Runners here?

I actually just started trail running again this year and have been slowly building up my mileage since January. I run three days a week and am up to 15-18 miles/week. I put some goals out on the horizon in January and so this week I'm doing that mileage in just two runs; I did 7.5 miles this morning (~1600ft of elevation gain for the loop) and have an 11 miler planned for Friday (~2000ft elevation). I'll head out for a 1.5-2.0 hr bike ride on Wednesday to loosening my legs up though.

I loathe running on pavement and the track (won't do it) but I LOVE running the trails, especially in the morning. I've had some great company on my runs too; just last week I was joined briefly by a coyote and then later on by a bobcat.

Several years back I started running in order to train for a duathlon but I injured myself during the training (still did the race though... and won my age group!). I never did get back in to running (or cycling) after my rehab that is until January of this year. I don't currently have plans to do a marathon but I can certainly see myself doing one in the future. I've also started cycling again this year and so I can also see a duathlon or two in my future (I'm a wee bit competative).

Of course, all this exercise is wreaking havoc on my golf game as I try to work out my swing now that I've dropped 30 pounds since the start of the year!

Re: Any Runners here?

Not sure if you can call what I do running anymore but it's hard for me to use word jogging.

It is hard on the joints but when I try walking for exercise I'm bored to tears. I love the idea of training for a marathon but I ran too many miles when I was younger to get away with it now. Anything more than a 10k and it takes a month to recover.

It doesn't help being over 50.

Go for it and then report on your progress here. Maybe I'll get inspired to do something stupid.

Love to cycle though...off road biking is tons of fun...although probably not as healthy as running its still a good workout.

Re: Any Runners here?

I can't run due to my knees, and I'm with Dave, jogging sounds like you've completely given up.

I'm still not smoking but definitely eating more so I've got to take something up soon. I'll most likely buy a mountain bike though.

Re: Any Runners here?

Even if it's something I would enjoy running is way too hard on my knees and back.

Re: Any Runners here?

You guys have it all wrong...running is not something your supposed to do...

Its a spectator sport...the whole point of going to the gym is to pick a strategically placed bike where you have to look down the line of treadmills with a slight angle so you can get a good view of the chics running and the TV at the end of the line...

Re: Any Runners here?

The plan is to do a half marathon in the fall and then a full marathon next spring (the same race I just ran a relay leg in)

I typically do 4 mile loops 3 times per week, and once the event gets closer, I'll start adding distance runs in. The goal for the 1/2 will be to come in somewhere around 1:40
