installing iron shafts

okay.. long story short, after a deal that went sour, i have to reinstall the shaft that i had pulled out from my nike iron set. Of course this deal was for my friend, so he will be paying for the reinstallation.

but i'm wondering if i could get the epoxy and the bead setter (sp?) and do it on my own. perhaps regrip and save that money for new wedge that i want. i read here that epoxy and beads are pretty much all i need. but what about the ferrule? how are they installed? and do i have to regrip the shafts?

should i attempt this or leave it to the shop?

thanks,

If you have a ferrule, install it on the shaft, dip the shaft tip into the mixed epoxy and push it into the head. Turn the head a few times and set it against the wall for overnight. Then you're done.

Use this as an easy guide. Iron shafting is super easy.

Retail GS store? Forsure.

Some shops won't sell you parts due to leagalities. Which is weak.

But you can get epoxy for lika 7 bucks at GS, and a pack of 12 ferrules is like 2 dollars. You can reshaft 20 clubs with that syringe, and 11 more irons.

.355 tapered Ferrules

24hr Epoxy

If it's just a reshaft, it's stupid easy. Just make sure you stir the epoxy for one minute - no less. That way, it will set up like a mofo and not come loose.

twofast

A few things,

make sure you have the correct epoxy. The stuff you buy at the hardware store will not work under any curcumstance.

Make sure you prep the shaft tips and the heads properly. This means removing all the old epoxy, all meaning 100% all. Abrade the tips, and the inside of the hosels lightly. Clean all the tips and inside the hosels with acetone.

thanks lyleG.

i'm gonna have to get my original shaft instead of true temper black gold.
i will eventually get new shaft (thinking either black gold or project x), but do i have to cut these like wood shafts? or do they come in standard size?

You will have to trim them to length.

All shaft companies have a trimming guide that you can follow. It's fairly easy.

Hell, if I can do it, you can. LOL.

I've hit the old PX's, and found them harsh. They're very Tour oriented and for the better player in my view.

I've heard nothing but good things about the Black Gold, but I've never hit them myself. I think Bames could chime in here about iron shafts. He had some pretty positive things to say about the Black Gold, if I recall correctly.

I play the BG's and they are hands down the nicest shafts I have ever hit. They feel buttery soft, very graphite feeling in that regard. They play stiff to flex thanks to a very stiff butt section, but tend to hit the ball a fair bit higher than the DG's thanks to a softer tip.
I found the PX's to be quite nice as well. Like Rock said, they are quite harsh however, but are really accurate high hitting shafts. IMO they are not worth the extra money over the golds however.

well i ordered a set last night and had to cancel it b/c they don't have it. i'm gonna put my original shaft and get BG set when golfsmith has them in stock.

another thing i can say about BG.

i was trying out a new irons at the shop near by, and hit adam's CB set. it felt really nice and had black gold shaft. a week later i hit some other adam's and i recall they were the same model or similar look, but the feel was night and day. the one w/ BG shaft definitely hands down smoother, perhaps same or even better than mizuno mp 32 (which i feel like i just s**t myself cuz it's so buttery).

Ez got me started w/ the shaft.. and now i'm getting the shaft. all i can think about is golf rather than preparing for my dental school interview this friday.. you shottalk folks are the best and the worst friends... now where's my wedge..
