Kinda angry from todays round and I need advice

Hey guys,

Today was one of those ehh *scratchs head* days. I mean could have been alot worse but didnt turn out so. So anyway shot an 83 on a 6.4k course.

So this leads to my question. After finishing the front 9 about 7 over I told myself that I no longer cared about the round and the damage has already been done, I followed the front with a +5 41. Has any1 ever had this type of mentality and actually helped you? I did this once before where I S****ed my way around a back 9 then shot 3 over on the front.

Thanks,

Flo

Are you the one who went from being a really bad golfer to near scratch in under 6 months? I may have you confused with somebody else, if so, sorry.

Up here in the tundra we can't even get a round in so be happy you've got something to bitch about. If I could play golf I'd take a 50 per nine and be smiling about it....

I played today at Pine Knolls Golf Course in Kernersville, NC. I pretty much stunk up the course. I have NO idea what I shot, but it was horrible. The best hole was...none of them. Oh, yeah I made 2 pars one on 7 (par 4) and one on 8 (par 5). I could not hit the broad side of a barn today. I must have shot a 110 or a 120. Pretty sure of it.

Nearly bad to scratch in 6... is that even possible? No, sorry probably not me but took me a 1 1/2 years to get into the 70 range. Stayed there for a good 3-4 months before having to start over with continious 95s.

Can't say that I really have. Maybe a little of the other way around with putting pressure on myself. Not exactly sure what you mean about +7 and +5? Is 2 strokes all that much better? I shot a 1 over with an eagle on the front once and then 6 over on the back. I'm usually a stronger starter than finisher.

Well the score doesnt reflect but it was just the whole process of making shots. I was seriously scrambling every hole. I had to make 4 putts over 20 feet to save par. I just saw an improvment in the driver and in the long irons after I just said to hell with the round.

Go out some time with zero expectations. In fact, have someone else keep score. Just play within yourself, conservative and make some good moves on some putts.

You'd be surprised how much better you play when you just "play" versus when you "care".

I'm not saying let your game go, just go out there and enjoy yourself. If you get into trouble, just get yourself out of it and move on.

Someone here, DaveE maybe, said that he tries to play golf in 6 tournaments of 3 holes each. He tries to put together 3 good ones in a row, and then forgets all about them, win or lose.

Might be worth trying too.

Good luck. And don't get down on yourself, that's the worst place to be. Just remember, the next good shot might be the one right now.

Cheers,

R35

I had a round going one day with my usual group that was so bad and had me so frustrated that I was going to walk off after 9 and just forfeit my money on all the usual bets. Nothing would go right, except shots that weren't supposed to. I was running about a 7 handicap at the time, and I had a 50 for the front 9. They managed to convince me to keep going, and I basically just gave up thinking about the game, and shot a two over 38 on the back. A 12 stroke differential, but I still managed to come out a little ahead on the money games!

That at the time was the record in our group, but it has since been replaced by another of our members who had a 14 stroke differential on the two nines.

I have no idea how two nines in the same round can be so Jekyl and Hide.

If a person has an accurate handicap, it

is absolutely amazing how often one will have a bad front nine followed by a good back nine. Likewise, if you have a really good front nine, it is very likely that the back nine will not be that great. If you have a typical front nine score, you will probably have a typical back nine score. All of this is IF your handicap truly reflects your ability.

So if you start out great, you have to force yourself to forget it! If you start out bad, you then must remember what your handicap is and allow your confidence to surge (can we use that term here?) for a great back nine.

Many a fine score comes as a total surprise to a player when somehow they managed to concentrate on the shot at hand and not worry about score. That seems to be one of the characteristics of what some call the ZONE. When a round played in the ZONE occurs, it really does feel like you come out of a trance, like you have been self-hypnotized. I remember getting into the ZONE for one hole. There was a four-way tie for first, and I was one of the four. They said there would be a sudden death on the first hole, a short par 4 that was 333 yards in length. Everyone hit nice drives, and then it was my turn. I caught the ball perfectly with a nice draw, it hit the ground and rolled right up on the green about ten feet from the cup. All of the other guys made par. I stroked the ball in for an eagle, and they kept on playing to determine second place. I walked back to the pro-shop, and everyone said, "Sorry about that. Better luck next time." I said that I had eagled the hole and won, and everyone got a good laugh. I was still in the trance I had been in since hearing that I was in a play-off. I was pretty sure that I had just won by driving the green and making the putt for eagle, but it was a strange feeling. Strange, but great! Every time I have done something a little bit special, I have had that feeling. I have gotten off the subject at hand, but when someone says that golf is more mental than anything else, I agree 1000%

Sincerely, Cypressperch

Good advice from cypress and rockford... leave your expectations on the first tee, place your attention on each shot instead of your score and just play. When a round starts off badly, it's pretty easy to let go of those expectations you first had for the round and you tend to just play.

A couple months ago, after playing a good round the day before and "expecting" this one to be another good one, I started off with a quadruple, triple, double and single bogie in the first 6 holes... I was 10-over! I finished the last 12 holes only 2-over.

However, I'm usually more like ezra and start off well, but self-destruct at the end when I realize I have a good round going. I've recently followed 3 birdies in a row with a quadruple bogie and finished a round with a triple and double bogie after getting to 17 at 1-over. The first time I walked up to 18 at even par, I triple bogied. The next time I got that opportunity, I double bogied.

Today I succeeded in finishing a good round without breaking down for only the 2nd time ever. I started my round with 2 bogies, then went 1-under for the next 16 holes to walk up to 18 just 1-over. I bogied 18, but finished just 2-over on course with a 135 slope... quite an accomplishment for me.

One thing I did different today was to write down my score after each hole, but not keep track of my total. I usually keep track in my head of how much I'm over par. I didn't do that today. I had no idea I was only 1-over when I approached 18. I just ended up on the wrong side of the pin and 3-putted. I didn't feel any pressure at any time during the round.

I really like the idea rockford shared about the guy who broke his rounds into 6 mini-rounds. I might give that a try... do your best for 3 holes, then let it go and move on to the next 3. nice.

of all the rounds i've ever played, the one i'm most proud of was one i played with a hs class-mate after a 35 yr reunion several yrs ago. i started off 7 over after 3 holes and considered going home at that time. ( i may have led the guy to think i was a good golfer after several reunion drinks) lol. i decided to play one shot at a time and not worry about total score, birded 16,17, & 18 and ended with a 5 over 76. every time i get of to a bad start (and they are numerous), i think back to that round and remember how good i felt to keep my mental focus and finish well.

Let go of each and every shot. Good or bad, think **** it, this next one is the only one worthy of my attention. I think that's more what you did, and did well.

I have had an 11 stroke differential between 9s before. I was +9 thru 7 (don't ask) and saidon the 9th tee, "I'm shooting 2 under from here in". I did it with a bird on 18 and I was very happy with myself. It's all about taking it one shot at a time and being determined enough to beleive you're going to do it
