Dormant fairways

Right now the Bermuda grass fairways around here are as flattened and hard as old ripply linoleum. And, they have irregular surfaces, I guess from rain causing the grass to clump. So it's usual to find my rare fairway shot to be sitting in one of the low spots surrounded by hard grass that is 1/4' to 1/2" higher. I'd almost rather have the ball sitting in the 1" rough.

I can't hit a fairway wood off of that crap. I either top it, fat it, or OOPS! hit so far behind the ball that the club bounces over the ball completely for a whiff.

Is it just me? Please, someone tell me I'm not the only one.

Our fairways are like this right now.

I'm hitting fat or thin and my short game is killing me because of it. I'm thinking if I can figure out how to deal with this my game should improve in the Spring though. That's what I keep telling myself anyway.

Its you, you should be hitting the ball reguardless of the frozen fairways. I can understand that you are hitting it low because frozen fairways makes it harder for you to get under the ball. I think you are having some mental issues, like your scared to hit the ball cause it might hurt your hands or damage your equipment.

Ours of course look just like yours now. I played last Wednesday and my biggest problem was chipping off these super tight lies. Kind of like chipping off the floor.

My fairway woods are still decent off them though...

I think I just have a natural shallow angle of attack.

I'm a picker, not a digger.

I hope you guys all don't mind that I don't feel for you one bit.

If I hit an iron right now, I'd have to get through 10" of snow before I could complain about grass.

Buncha bastards....

Bahhhh,

If you love golf so much you would move to a climate where you can play year round.

Ours are not just hard, they are frozen solid. Surprisingly not getting a whole lot of extra distance on drives but irons are tough to hit. I take divots and have some trouble off these things. BTW, we have "winter rules". It's lift and place off those lies where it's in a hole surrounded by the frozen clumps. I won't hit off bare ground if I see rocks. I'm not about to put anymore dings in my irons to play it as it lies.

Just back from a 5 day tour of Spain .. 22* for 4 of the days .. yeah the bermuda was dormant, yeah I duffed a muthaload of chips, couldn't get a read on the greens, didn't hole a putt outside 6 feet in 5 days .. but I left Dublin airport in a blanket of snow and returned with a suntan, an aggravated liver compaint and a rash I can't explain .. must've been the seafood ...
