Greens and Putts in regulation question.

Say you are playing a par 4 and your second shot lands on the fringe of the green. Does this count as a green in regulation?

If you are on the fringe or in the light rough but decide to use your putter instead of chipping does this count as a putt?

I used to count putts any time I used my putter even when I was in the rough but someone told me putts only count if you are on the green. I like to use my putter any time I can. After I started just counting my putts only on the green my putting stats look much better.

YES-this is correct, and you should keep 2 putting stats, one when you hit the green and then total putts

If you use a sw on the green is it a putt (such as Phil this weekend)?

I count fringe putts as GIR and as a putt. I do not count using a putter off the green as a putt but as a chip that I decided the the best club to chip with was the putter.

A ball on the fringe is not considered on the Green. So it would not be considered a GIR, nor would it count as a putt. In the same sense that you are not permitted to mark it and pick it up and clean the ball.

If it is on the green it is a putt.

Yep. I use a wedge over a putter every time. PPH and PPGIR are two entirely diffent stats. My overall PPH this year was 1.7 my PPGIR was 2.2. What does that say? I need to work on my approach shots, my GIR are horrid and I'm chipping them close and even a chip in every 30 something holes. My low round was 22 putts and I chipped in twice.

yes, only putts ON the green count... even if you land the green, then putt past the hole unto the fringe, then make the return putt... that only counts as ONE putt.

reminds me of the round I saw last year where Paula Creamer (I think it was her) landed a par 3 green from the tee, then putted off the green, across the cart path and into a hazard. She took a drop for an unplayable lie, chipped the ball back to the green, but the ball came back and rolled back into the hazard. This time the ball was playable. She chipped this time to the fringe on other side of the green to keep from rolling back again. She putted from the fringe and kept the ball on the green this time. From there she 2-putted. Even though she scored a GIR and shot an 8 for the hole, she only recorded 3 putts!

Thanks, Artful. I had this happen a round or two back and wasn't sure how to keep stats on it. Makes sense.

Hard to figure isn't it? Actually it depends on the circumstnaces for me. I don't like putting through more than 5 or 6 feet of fringe, less on a course that's a bit ragged. You also would be wise to putt through an old divot (yes it even happens on the fringe), or a deep ball mark. So I just take each case as it comes.

outside 20 feet (realistically makeable) i will always chip from the fringe. i just trust my 52* rac that much for chipping. ive never been much of a lag putter, and can gauge the distance, and get it close more easily with a wedge. chipping is by far the best part of my game. hell ifi could id chip from 40 feet ON the green.

This subject has my mind wondering about

something: In keeping the putting statistics of pros, is it true that if they hole out from off the green that that hole is not included in their putting stats, since they did not have to putt? The logic of this being that holing out has nothing to do with your putting ability though it certainly would lower your putts per hole.

There is no rule against chipping on a green, unless your home course has passed a local rule. However, if you take a divot on the green, you probably will be asked to never come back.

Ball on green = GIR, no exceptions.

Ball struck while on green = putt, not exceptions.

Although depending on the stats you keep, considering a putt from 3" off the green a putt and a GIR is pretty close its up to you. Not like your getting judged if your making a birdie/par from wherever, as long as its a 4 on the scorecard it dont matter.
