Wrist Release

Hey everyone,

I've been working real hard on my biggest problem, over the top swing... giving me the outside-to-in divits and a slice... boy I hated that slice.

By slowing down my swing A LOT and relaxing my grip I have gained distance and a much straiter ball flight. Something funny has happend tho, I think when I downswing, eventho I have kept the club head inside, my hands are further from my stomach and when my wrist un**** the club head is pulling the ball to the left. Still kind of like outside-to-inside action, but its just at the release.

I have tried sliding hips, weight placement back to forward, shoulders... everything they say to do. My hands just dont want to come back to ball address.

Can anyone help or suggest a fix? This is more a problem with long irons, but it's present in my swing so it is affected all shots.

Thanks,

Dash

Don't slide your hips, it's one of the baddest advice taught in golf. When you slide to your left in your downswing, your spine gets tilted to your right, which makes your hands and clubface angled to your right, then you get a nice push slice. You need to maintain your spine angled the same throughout the whole swing.
But, I have trouble understanding your problem. Maybe a video of your swing would help?

Thanks Loop. I'll try and see what I can do about providing a video of the swing.

The problem comes in my downswing. I go real slow to keep the club on a clean path, but its like my hands get pushed out so when the wrist go to realease the club head its now outside, and has to do a last second sweep outside-to-in in order to compinsate.

Before I use to swing the club head outside when it was at the top of my swing, I've taught myself not to allow that to happen, but somewhere down the line it still works its way outside. When I was pushing the club head outside at the top of my swing i was slicing (putting huge left to right spin), now I keep the club head on an inside path, but somewhere it gets pushed outside and im hooking due to compinsation needed to bring the club head to the ball.

Its hard to understand whats wrong, cant feel some things... and a video would make it a lot easier... I'll see what I can do about that.

agreed we would need a video, but have you tried keeping your right arm (assuming you are a right hander) tucked in,and particularly at the top

does your weight move to the inside of your right foot with your back swing?

Keep a head cover tucked under your right arm thru the swing. That will keep the swing togather.

Thanks for the tips everyone.

I went to the driving range and I was noticing how nice the guy next to me was hitting the ball, great swing plane. I told him my problem and he looked at my swing. He told me at top of my back swing, the next movement should be to bring right elbow to the hip... droping the arms like I am ringing a bell.

That seemed to help. Suppose the problem was quite simple, my swing plane is still way off. Before it would start out wide at the top of my back swing, now its just moving out during my down swing.

I'm hitting the range tomorrow, and going to keep your tips in mind.

Also, trying to get my brother to record my swing... we'll see how that goes.

On my back swing my weight is moved to my back foot and the weight is flat around the whole foot... I wouldnt say to one side or the other.

The weight shift forward is kind of a different story. At the point of impact, or just there after my right arm feels "short" and pulls on the club. I guess this is from improper weight shift forward?

This game is funny just 1 decent shot in 100 is all it takes to keep me coming back for more.

That guy on the range is right. You just "drop" your hands, and only let gravity do the work. Don't try pulling down your hands, nor getting them forward. The hands just hold the club, nothing else (as Ben Hogan would say ). The whole work is done by the hips rotation.
Also, I suggest using a strong grip if you don't already use it.
