What is it that PGA players carry with them on the course?

Well, I watched the master's for the first time ever on TV this past weekend.

I noticed that some players carry a memo pad with them on the course. Is this so they can look at notes they've jotted down during practice rounds, past experience? or is it a yardage book? or both?

thanks.

both

it's a little of both. It's a yardage book, and the caddy tyupically has taken notes in practice rounds and by wlking the course and determining intermediate yardage landmarks to account for a variety of shots. I read somewhere that the books are put together by a former caddy, and available via website; but I'm not sure on this point.

Yardage books mostly, but I am sure there are plenty of notes in it as well. At Augusta, I would also hazard a bet that they had some greens charts with accurate diagrams of the undulations and where the balls filter down to for each green. Where they landed the ball on the green at Augusta basically seemed to determine their fate this week.

Kinda like that one shot Tiger made on the last day (can't remember which hole).

He overshot the green and the ball just rolled down to about 1 foot from the pin.

Yupper. Those greens can make or break you. If Tiger's shot on 15 goes another few inches longer, the ball stops and he has a lengthy down hill putt that will probably not stop anywhere near the hole. Instead, it comes back down the hill setting up a fairly short Eagle putt.

His chip shot on 16 from 2005 really helps define how tricky the Augusta greens can be. How many times have you chipped it away from the hole in order to sink a chip? Crazy fast greens with the kind of slopes Augusta has in them require some creative shot making.

In addition to the notes and yardage books, I think you saw players 'making note' of their score after completing each hole to compare this with what their scoring partner recorded and attested to during play.

Then, when they go into the "scoring hut" after the round, they can do a quick comparison between their own note and what their playing partner recorded. Keeps them from having to go through hole by hole from memory to insure that they do not sign an incorrect scorecard.
