No sponsor logos on the cardigans. It must have been cool to just wear whatever you wanted.

Oh, there are plenty, but you gotta go back some. Tommy Armour, OMG, he was one hard bastard! Or some of the early Scottish / English pros that set up shop in the US, they were bloody hard!! Vardon / Ted Ray / John McDermot etc. Just gotta read The Greatest Game Ever Played. Will send shivers up yer spine and teach you a thing or two about how hard these early golfing gods were.

Great pic btw

O'Grady falls into the Nut Job bracket, not so much hard as Psycho!
Bolt was fairly hard tho.

Pity there were no "cool" photos in those days...

I think if Daly took off about 100 pounds and told us what he really thought he may fit right in.

Certainly the only one that come to mind.

This past weekend, CBS had a telecast of the 1960 Masters, where Arnie birdied the final two holes to win it...I saved it on Tivo and didn't watch it until last night when I could sit down with a drink and relax and really watch it closely.

Originally filmed in black and white, they had digitially remastered it into color. It looked surprisingly good.

They only had six cameras then, all fixed and the only holes televised were the final three.

Here's some trivia from the telecast...

1) On 16, Palmer had about a 20 uphill putt (and yes they had the same Sunday hole location they use now).

As he addressed the putt, I noticed the pin was in the hole...then he putts it and it is headed straight for the center of the cup...

Hits the pin and bounces away. The announcer indicates he had the option of leaving it in or having it taken out. Clearly, if he had left it in, he would have birdied the final three holes!

2) They did not call them "hole locations" but "pin placements".

3) They did not call them "bunkers" but "sand traps".

The galleries were permitted out in the fairways. The marshals would allow them to stand about ten feet behind the player as he hit.

As soon as they hit the shot, the galleries would sprint forward seeking the best location around the green to watch the action...in this regard, the players (who of course were simply walking forward) were surrounded by running spectators blazing by. If someone wanted to tackle a player, it would have been easy...or maybe just accidently run into them...

4) Wristy putting strokes. All of us have been taught to keep our wrists firm when putting and to putt with our shoulders.

The players back then did the opposite. They kept their shoulders comparatively fixed and slapped the putter forward with their wrists. Every player I saw on this telecast used this same technique...

5) Furry edged bunkers. We all see bunkers now that have edges that seem to be cut with shears...a perfect cutline around them.

Back then, they were furry and clumpy. Looked kind of like a muni in terms of maintenance. The fairways and greens looked great though...

Arnie himself was there to comment on the video and it was pretty cool....
