Thread: Huge greens

  1. Huge greens

I was watching the Champion tour today where Haas beat Kite in a playoff and those greens are the size of a small lake in Wisconsin. How could you not hit greens in regulation when you could take any iron out of your bag and land it on the green no matter how you hit it. I'd be interested to see how those guys do on county course with postage stamp size greens for ease of maintenance.... Sorry but I KNOW I could hit those greens...

I hit a drive on a 290 yd, par 4 hole today and it rolled up on the left side of the green. Unfortunately the pin was about 80 feet across the green on the right side. This damn beast might not have been massive per PGA standards but I've sure never seen a green this big before.

Took me three freaking putts to make it across the damn thing to save par... and I drove it right on the green!

I guess marking the green in regulation on my card would look nice but the three putt sure looked bad!

I went from being elated, when I knew I saw the ball roll up on the green, to frustrated, when I saw exactly how big this green was, pretty quick! lol.

Don't kid yourself man. A par for them at your course would be like you making a triple. They'd beat the course record by 5 or 6 strokes on an average day. I was reading up some stuff about what it takes to really be a pro on tour. It said to go find the 10 hardest courses in your area you've never played before and go off the tips. Break the course record 1st time on 8/10 and then you can start thinking about the Nationwide tour. lol.

Perhaps not quite like a margin like that, but I know what you mean Ez . The greens out there mean that GIRs are always going to be high if you find the short stuff - but as said before, some of the jabs with the putter might be hellish! I'd prefer a small green with the oppurtunity of a confident sand save or a chip rather than a 50ft putt.

There's a short scottish links style course by my house that is a par 31, 2047 yards, very short, with 3 drivable holes. But 2 of these holes are part of a double green system, so youd better have distance right, Ive had quite a few 100+ feet putts before because I smoked my drive and ended up on the other side of the green, its an easy birdie to lay up to wedge distance.

LOL...I've noticed that also, some of the greens are the length of a hole on one course in the area.
When asked how to put back spin on a i7,
Trevino said how far do you hit it?
The guy said 120yds and Trevino said why do you want to back it up?

  8. I noticed that also when they were showing the view from above. You could probably use 4 different clubs on an approach shot and still be on the green. Those were easily 3 times the size of the greens that I usually play on.

Our S.I. 1 hole has a 51 yard long green. It is something else. I am aware of a green at the European Club in Ireland that has a green that is something like 120 yards long.
"Golf takes us away from our everyday worries. It allows us to lose ourselves in the beauty of our natural surroundings. And it provides a serene setting for enjoying the camaraderie of our fellow players.
No matter how good we get at it, golf always makes us strive to do better. In golf, as in life, there is no perfection, but we can always seek it. Golf constantly challenges us to aim farther, try harder, and be more than we are today. And really, what game could be better than that...?"

You probably aren't too far off. When I was still in college I was playing to a 0.3 handicap at the time, I thought it would be fun to try and get on one of the tours. Against regional opponents I did fairly well and getting on a new course and shooting -2 was exciting. Then we started playing teams out of Arizona, Texas, Florida and bunch of other schools from the south east US. These kids were coming in just tearing up the courses we played on, shooting -6,-7, or -8 under. And I have only seen a few of them it on any of the tours (of course I don't remember a lot of there names) so maybe a few more then I know of.

Personally I would take a 100 ft chip over a 100 ft putt 99.9% of the time. On some courses, getting on the greens means you still had most of your work ahead of you.
