Stellar USA start to the Ryder Cup.

Through nine holes, only two holes have been halved, while the Euros have won four and the U.S. three. A birdie by Woods helped halve the 2nd, but Harrington's tee shot on the 3rd landed three feet short and he made birdie from there. The Euros made a mess of the 5th hole, finally conceding birdie to Woods, but came back with a long Monty birdie putt on the 6th. Mickelson's birdie putt was conceded on 7, bringing the U.S. to within 1-down, but Harrington came back with another birdie on 8 to again go 2-up. Another Woods birdie brought it back to 1-down through 9. On 12, Harrington and Montgomerie each put their approach shots to within five feet, with Harrington making his birdie putt to win the hole.

Maybe Love and Campbell should have slept in. Neither player has made a birdie yet today, while the cigar-smoking Euro duo is smoking on the greens, too. Clarke and Jimenex have made four birdies between them to go 5-up and have yet to lose a hole.

These twosomes were feeling each other out, each making pars on the opening five holes before McGinley drained a birdie putt on 6 to take a 1-up lead. On 7, McGinley and Cink traded lengthy birdie putts to halve the hole, but Riley knocked his 194-yard approach to within inches on 8 to win the hole.

Sergio Garcia/Lee Westwood vs. Jim Furyk/David Toms

Garcia drained a long birdie putt to win the 1st hole, then Westwood made birdie putts on the 2nd and 4th and Garcia made one at 9 to go 4-up. This pairing has been successful before, gaining three points in four matches together at The Belfry in 2002. Furyk made the first birdie for the U.S. team at 6, but Garcia matched him to halve the hole; that's the only birdie this American duo has managed.
