120,000 golf balls a year??!?

I am watching the 2nd round of the TPC on the internet and they are showing the 17th hole (only).

They claim that 120,000 balls are lost in the water every year on the hole. Showed divers bringing up huge amounts of balls.

I mean, a busy course gets about 40,000 rounds of golf per year.

How could they possibly get that many out of the water on one hole in one year?

Well u have all the hackers who go to play there who dunk like 3-4 balls each into there when they fork the money out to play. There were 50 alone in the first round of The Players, so even great players are dunking multiple balls into there. Just watched Rory Sabbatini drop 2 into the water, didnt see if he dunked a 3rd...

On a steamy June day, Spagnolo hit 27 balls in the water from the tee box and drop area. Finally, TOUR rules officials directed him to putt down the cart path on the left and up the narrow path that leads to the green from the back left. Spagnolo totaled 257 to "win" the Digest title -- keyed by a 66 on No. 17.

How many balls did he lose on the 16 holes prior and on #18? He must have had a caddy just to carry his ball supply.

holy sh*t!!! he tied the low round of the 2nd round from the players, just with his score on 17...

This indeed is a large number of balls however, I think the water is uniquely positioned on two very demanding holes. For the 17th there is no bail out, you are either on the green or in the water. For 16, you miss the green to the right and you're in the water. Don't most amateurs miss their long approach shots to the right...

300 / by and correct me I'm wrong, 3 balls per golfer is the average...

Yes I watched several hours of the tournament over the weekend and plenty of balls were dunked...Sean O'Hair sending two in the water on the 71st hole was indicative...
