Tommy Gainey - Nationwide Tour

Flicking through PGATOUR.com i always like to look at the Nationwide Tour, and low and behold there is the BB7 Contestant Tommy Gainey 1 off the lead early in Round 3! This wasnt his exempt tourney was it? or has he jumped the gun and pre qualified?. GO TOMMY TWO GLOVES !!!

It shouldn't have been the exemption, they are usually after the show has fully aired. I am assuming he Monday qualified since its in his home state of South Carolina just like he Monday qualified for the Wachovia in North Carolina the other week.

He is looking really good. One back in 2nd place after 3 days. Does he get a Nationwide exemption for winning a tourney? Auto qual for the next event for finishing top 10?

Final round 77 ! finishes T30 gutted for him, probably because there was no wall to pitch over or obstacle to shape a shot around! or any 3 point circles on the greens!

But hey he is there and i am not so good luck to TWO GLOVES and lets hope he has done the deeds with Bri Vega as well!

Looks like he just didn't play well under the lights. I believe this was his first Nationwide event and playing in the last group on sunday seems to have gotten to him. If he would have made his birdie putt on 18 he would have finished 24th and been able to play this week. So he missed an opportunity in his first event, but I believe he has shown he can compete and may get more chances in the future.

One thing I wonder, and I see this with some people I play with, why drive the ball to 65-75 yards if you can't hit a wedge?? What good is a 315 yard drive if you can't hit a wedge out from under your feet?? I don't understand. Tommy hit some bombs in the fairway and then proceeded to hit wedges long, fat, short, left, pretty much everywhere but the green. Put something in the middle of the fairway about 120-130 or whatever a full wedge is and hit it.

Yeah, he had the same problem on BB too. I play with guys that do this all the time -- they outdrive me by 30 yds. but I have a more or less full shot to the green and they chunk their approach to somewhere in another county. My short game is the best part of my game and I consistently beat those guys because they waste a lot of strokes around and on the green.

Me, I just try to make sure I keep the long ones in play and stay out of trouble until I get in the scoring range. If I do that then all is good.

This is what I have been trying to do lately. Leave myself with 120-100 left which is a full wedge. Led to my lowest nine hole round 40.

I don't understand how professional golfers can be so bad at those kinds of shots. Anyone who plays even remotely seriously should have precise yardage numbers for 1/2, 3/4, and full swings for every club from LW through 9-iron and should be able to hit any number under their 9-iron distance with two or even three different clubs.

I've never had problems with half-swing lob wedges. I always try to get as close to the green as possible unless the flag is situated somewhere that requires a lot of spin.

yeah and how far do you hit the ball compared to "those guys"? My point exactly. WHen you hit the ball that far, its tough to judge distance. Another reason is that "those guys" dont hit the ball long EVERY round

Gainey will be fine.

I love the fact that people seem to think that it is as simple as hitting a full wedge instead of a 70 yard shot to have changed the outcome of one round of golf. I believe the 70 yard shot worked well for the first three days. Tommy will be fine. His game has a few course records on the tarheel tour and he just won his first hooters event in Ark. He has played in 3 events on the tarheel tour and is second on that money list. Now he is exempt for two years on the hooters tour and currently 15th on the hooters tour after playing in two events. Anyone here think they can do better. Monday qualify and show us how it's done.............

I don't think anyone questioned his game. Obviously he can play. We also know that golf is a fickle game. If you are playing and a few holes in you have hit some terrible shots from 70 yards, do you continue to bomb away and then chunk a wedge?? Or do you hit something different to say 135-140 and hit a full shot into the green?? I understand guys playing professional golf can stuff a 70 yard wedge to 5 feet but if its not happening that day why continue to do it?? If a 10 handicap is on the range before a round slicing everything right, do you go setup down the middle on the first tee and hit the ball right in the woods?? Or do you setup down the left side and hit the ball in the fairway??

On a somewhat connected issue and rather than starting a new thread ... Guy Woodman the beaten finalist in BB4 has won his first EuroPro Tour (Development Tour) event this month, beating a guy who has played on the full euro tour (Russell Claydon) in a playoff .. I was suprised it took him so long coz I really thought that he had the smarts to make it in the bigtime ..
