Clubbing-up in the wind.

Does any one use an analytical method to determine what club you should use into a head wind. Like 1 club more for every 10mph of wind.

Dave's right, depends on feel and experience. I played yesterday in brutal wind. I hit a knock down 6 iron 90 yards and a knockdown 8 iron about 60 yards. I also hit a 365 yard drive

The KDs were the most fun I got all day.

It depends on your ability to shape you shots to max the wind, but directly into it with an average swing, 10mph generally equals 1 club.

Pretty much by feel for me. I've played in some ferocious winds here along the front edge of the Rockies. I just try estimate the effects and hope that my short game is in order that day.

We get a decent amount of wind being at the base of the SF Bay penninsula and I've had some fun with shots into and with the wind. My favorite was a dead into the wind 6 iron from 120 that came up short (I hit it as well as I could hit a 6 iron). On the very next hole that same 6 iron, struck well, with the wind aiding flew the green from 190+ out. You just got to "feel" it.

I've also learned to hit knockdowns this year and that has helped a ton. The wind picks up through out the day here and one of the local ranges almost always is into the wind in the late afternoon. I try a late range session there every couple weeks to work on my wind game.

This is the real key to beating the wind. If your short game is off, you're pretty much screwed...

I agree with the shot shaping. I can hit lower trajectory borderline pulls pretty well. I don't fly the ball all that high anyway so I usually never go more than 2 clubs and if I do it's a knockdown type shot.

Where I live (West Texas) we average between 19 and 23 MPH winds everyday, so I have learned to hit lower shots. Into a 20 MPH head wind, I take 2 more clubs and choke down (essentially 1 1/2 clubs more). Also, I put the ball back in my stance a litlte, and I swing smooth. I used to try to hit it harder into the wind, but a physics lesson showed me that this imparted more backspin, which cause the ball to balloon and fall short. I typically will not hit anything shorter than a PW into the wind if I don't have to (love those knock down 7 irons from 100 yards).

TBH i LOVE hitting into the wind. i play it all by feel, and can control the ball a lot better. no joke , i can hit knock-down shots like a tour pro. not to brag, but ive never played with someone who had better control with them than me. i even play them with no wind. hitting irons downwind though , thats another story. cant stand it...

Its 30 km of wind or higher for about 95% of my rounds at my course. I just memorize what clubs to hit into what wind/damp conditions. Its when the winds are down that I can have problems. You think you have it bad in texas, try hitting into 20mph winds, 40 degrees and misty outside ...thats what I had today when hitting a 5 iron into a par 3 160 yards. Nova Scotia loses atleast 15 yards of carry due to air thinkness and temperature alone.
